Description
Here we have a really amazing piece of art, by the maestro and my good friend, Dave Williamsand myself. Be sure to drop by Dave's gallery to check out the amazing pencils.
A little bit of background. I probably spent as much time on this piece than any in my career. It was the perfect storm. A) I consider Dave to be one of the best of the best our art form has to offer. He's a legitimate genius in my book. It's always a bit nerve wracking to work with someone like this for, essentially, the first time. I dont want to be "the guy that f'ed up Dave's masterpiece.
B) As some of you already know, Ive been dealing with some hand issues. Due to a neck injury a number of months back I was left with some minor nerve damage resulting in a small tremor in my drawing hand. NOT good. Ive spent the last 4 months trying to work through it. Its been a slow-going, frustrating process that had left me burnt out, discouraged, and considering the future of my career in inking. Im happy to say that, due to regular Acupuncture treatements over the last month and a half, my hand seems to have returned to me. Im back to about 95% and feeling much more optimistic about things.
However, I was working on this cover in the midst of the worst of it all. I agonized over every single line. Nothing really flowed for me. The end result was, in my opinion, much stiffer and mechanical looking than Id otherwise have done it. Much of the spontenaety of my lines were sucked away since I had to put so much effort in to my hand control. It took twice as long to do.
Im not saying Im not happy with it. In fact, I think its a very successful piece. I just know that I could have done better and me being the harsh self-critic that I am, all I see are the faults.
The fact that Dave was happy with it brings me endless amounts of joy and more than a little relief. Considering how difficult it was for me to pull off, I consider it a big triumph. I hope you do as well!

Great , by the way, do you hand-draw these and scan them onto the computer?

Yes. All my art is done by hand using traditional methods.

I know this is an old post mr. Townsend, but the story behind this piece is so inspiring and encouraging. I can only imagine how hard and frustrating moment you must have had during the inking process of this unbelievable piece. And how you overcome the difficult of not being able to express your artwork thru your brushes.
ItΒ΄s a lesson for all of us, not only for working, but for life.
All the best, sir!
Cheers.

Maybe, just maybe, this the best collabo I ever seen (You and Dave). The second fave of mine, after your inking works on Mad!'s, and slightly atop Bachalo's. You two should do more and more in the future!

Thank you! I wasnt too thrilled with how my end turned out. My hand isnt what it was due to an injury and it was giving me a particularly rough time when I worked on this. I wish it was a little more organic. But Dave was happy and thats enough for me!

Brilliant and inspiring stuff. It would be a dead-set tragedy if you lost your capacity to ink as well as you do. I've been appreciating your inks in the comics I read for years now, and you are in my personal list of top 5 most talented inkers.

Sorry to hear about the hand, that sounds miserable. It doesn't show at all, this cover looks great. You team-up with Williams nicely! What am I sayin?!? You can ink anybody and make em' look good.

Such an interesting style. Kinda retro. Really reminds me of the old comics with their halftone, faded colors.
Boner-inducing inks by the way, as always.

Yeah, I know what you mean, but anyone can see you have the right attitude toward the art you're inking. You're very respectful and know how to serve the strength of the pencillers while embellishing the rest.

Well, I appreciate that. Thank you again! Ive always felt that a good inker (and colorist for that matter) should know when to push and when to hold back. Theres no need to spill out your entire bag of tricks on to each page just for the sake of showing what you can do. There should always be a reason for an approach. We're the supporting cast so we shouldnt try to make the final product about us. In my humble opinion of course.
