Description
I.I took a walk once, and
Depression walked alongside me.
"I want to be alone," I told him.
"I know," he replied,
"Why do you think I'm here?"
II.
"I have a plan,"
Depression said to me.
"Not today," I said.
"I'm tired."
He frowned and asked,
"How did you know my plan?"
III.
I gave the weekend over to Depression
but he took three days
instead of two.
"Think of it as an investment," he said.
"And maybe I'll let you have a Friday night
without regrets."
IV.
Fallen to the floor
I look up and see
he's smiling at me.
"You know what they say
about old dogs."
He's doing this on purpose,
I know he is-
and it's working.
"They can't learn new tricks?"
I asked, playing my part.
"No," he replied,
"They die."
V.
I walked away,
my Trials and Tribulations
defeated behind me.
Depression followed,
but even he took a moment
and whistled low.
"I don't think much of you, but
those were some big guys."
I answered honestly:
"What were they,
compared to you?"
VI.
I looked Depression in the eye
staring without pardon or pause.
"Stop that," he said.
"Why," I asked,
"You nervous?"
He looked away
and said nothing.
VII.
Depression smiled at me
And I smiled back.
"You can't win,"
he told me.
"Winning's not the point,"
and I took my turn on the board.
"The point is to keep playing."
He laughed
but said nothing.
"Your move,"
I told him.
VIII.
I look beside me and see
that Depression and I
never once lost stride.
He's still here,
still with me.
"Who knows," he said.
"Maybe you’ll grow old one day.
We'll sit on rocking chairs,
cursing one another,
still playing our little game."
He smiled, and maybe I did too.
"Better yet," I told him.
"Maybe you won't be around at all."

This is truly spot on. I think many people can relate.
I felt a mix of feelings as i read it because it reminded me of my battle with depression.
And I can't believe how short this is and yet everything is said. Well done

I was actually worried that this was too long. Truth be told, I was going to cut a stanza (or two) but I couldn't decide which one to cut, so I said to hells with it, it may be rubbish, but it's my rubbish, so up it went intact. I'm very glad I'm didn't edit it anymore than I did now. ^^ Good luck with your own struggles, and thanks for reading.

I hope you realize how immensely valuable this is. There are too many works about depression out there that do little more than paint a portrait of despair; you managed to capture the better along the worse.
Furthermore, even being a painfully accurate portrait of this struggle, the contrast between the topic and the clean, simple honesty of your words makes it light on the heart. For this work, you deserve all the praise and recognition you can get, and then some.
Also, I completely agree with you: for better or for worse, it's a part of us and it makes us who we are. What to do of it, is our choice.

Depression has been with me all of my life and I too have not wanted to live on this earth anymore since a very young age, when my depression began that is. Depression is a terrible thing. It has ruined so many days of my life. Not one day goes by without crying or the feeling of just wanting to end it all being so prominent in my mind.
I love the words, "The point is to keep playing". That quote one hundred percent sums everything up.
A truly remarkable piece executed skilfully through using minimal description - that still ends up painting vivd imagery to which the viewer can relate to. Well done. I would have love to have seen some artwork based on this.

Then I remember that this is a sorry boat to be in, and I wish you were safe on land. In any case, thanks for reading. c:

I found this to be beautiful and it captures you so much, specially when you have already known Mr D and looked him in the eye. I find that he likes to go to sleep and will make me think I've won the game and then suddenly come back, but the thing is to keep playing, and to know that there are victories, even if he insists you can't win.
Big hugs to you
