My partner, Sparx, stumbled clumsily to a stop beside me as we entered the chamber. "It's a dead end!"
"W-Where's Darkrai?" I panted, looking over my shoulder to make sure that there were no longer any Pokemon chasing after us.
"I don't know. He said he'd meet us in Dark Crater Pit, but he doesn't seem to be here..." Cresselia mumbled, not sounding exhausted at all as she warily examined our surroundings.

The heat in the room was almost oppressive. We were in a volcano, after all. We were surrounded by jagged rocks on all sides, with magma beyond that.

I anxiously shuffled my paws against the rough stone floor. "I'm going to kill him."
Sparx gave me a look of mild horror. "Kill him?"
"Yes, kill him! He trapped Azurill in a nightmare, and he'll do it to the rest of the world too if we don't stop him!" I growled. "I won't let that happen to anyone else!" I thought of the young Pokemon, currently lying locked in a deep slumber in my room at the guild, and felt another wave of anger rush over me.

The room suddenly became shrouded in darkness.

"You've kept me waiting." came Darkrai's voice.

I felt the chill of his tone all the way down to my bones, and I shuddered involuntarily. The shadowy Pokemon suddenly appeared before us.

“Darkrai!” Sparx cried.

He began to clap his clawed hands slowly. “Good of you to come, Sparx and Tori!”

“W-Why did you come after us? Why come after everyone in Treasure Town, everyone in the world?! You don’t know us, what could we have done to you?” Sparx yelled, clenching his paws with sparks flying out of his cheeks.

The clapping ceased immediately. “I know you all too well. You especially,” He turned and focused a single piercing blue eye on me. “Tori.”

“W-What?!” I gasped.

He seemed to almost smile at my surprise.

“When you came to this world with Grovyle, Tori… You got into an accident, yes?” He probed.

’Accident…? Oh, that’s right! Grovyle explained it while we were in the future trying to find the portal!’ I was suddenly thrown into my memories. The sounds of a fierce storm, screaming at Grovyle to hold on, being suddenly torn away and flung with incredible force.

“Yes, the pair of you had quite the accident. But I don’t suppose you ever learned what actually caused it, now did you?” He said with mocking curiosity. “It is what caused you and your partner to be separated.” Suddenly, he was right next to me, tugging on one of my ears roughly and ruffling the collar of fur around my neck. “You even got turned into a cute little Eevee because of it! Although, you’d look so much cuter if you were asleep.”

“Get your filthy hands off of me!” I furiously snapped at his hands and snarled, my fur bristling. Even his touch felt unnatural.

He gave me that odd smile again. “And you even lost your memory! How unlucky you were to have such an unfortunate accident~! Right at the exact moment when you and your partner were traveling through time.”

Sparx shifted uncomfortably. “Darkrai… You know something about this? About what happened to Tori and Grovyle?”

Dakrai let out a deep laugh that resonated throughout the room.

“Well, of course I know! I’m the one that caused it, after all!”

Immediately, I was seeing red. This Pokemon disrupted my mission with Grovyle, separated me from him, took my memories, and turned me into a Pokemon. He was the reason why everything happened the way it did. I lunged at him, snarling and snapping, ready to tear him limb from limb if I needed to. Sparx had to hold me back, and even he struggled to do so. Cresselia narrowed her eyes as Darkrai laughed again.

“You find this awfully amusing, Darkrai.” She stated coldly.

“Well of course I do!” He chuckled softly to himself. “My goal… is to cover this world in darkness. I was the one who sabotaged Temporal Tower. This would have eventually led to the destruction of time. Your world would have been paralyzed once more. But…” His eye flashed with a hidden rage. “Grovyle and Tori had to meddle. So, I learned when they were coming and acted accordingly. I tried to make it so that they would no longer be able to interfere with my plans. But something happened that prevented me from being able to be rid of them.”

“Then I think it’s safe to assume that you know why Tori was turned into an Eevee upon arriving in this world.”

“Of course, I’m not a moron. Her will to protect her partner was so strong that she jumped in front of my attack. Took it head-on! Rather stupid if you ask me. If you hadn’t done that, you’d still have your memories!”

I could barely believe what he said. I had shielded Grovyle? I knew we had been partners before, but I had really been willing to do that for him?

“I thought that it would be enough to render you incapable of preventing the planet’s paralysis. But as it turns out, I underestimated you. You met with Sparky over here and managed to destroy my original plan to collapse Temporal Tower.” He sneered.

Cresselia’s eyes narrowed, and the crescent shapes on her body began to pulse with a soft light. “So that’s why you wanted to meet us here! You wanted to get rid of Sparx and Tori first so they couldn’t get in your way again!”

Darkrai sighed dramatically and shrugged. “Ah yes, that was my intention at first.”

I relaxed in Sparx’s grip and raised a wary eyebrow, my fur still bristling. “What do you mean by ‘change of heart’?”

“Well, the both of you are very brave! And you’ve shown wonderful initiative in getting this far. Doesn’t just getting rid of you here seem like a bit of a waste? A tragic waste, indeed.” He gasped. “Oh, I know! Why not join me?”

All three of us were speechless after that.

“It’s entirely possible, should we join forces! Well? What do you say?”

Cresselia whirled to face us. “Don’t believe his lies! That is not his intention! Please, you cannot trust him!”

Sparx stayed silent, staring at the ground. Cresselia gaped at him.

“Sparx, truly you can’t be considering his offer!?” She cried.

He lifted his head to look at me, and what I saw in his eyes broke my heart. They were empty. Completely devoid of life, and instead filled with nothing but despair.

“Maybe… Maybe Darkrai is right.” He whispered.

“What?! Have you just forgotten everything he’s done, everything he’s tried to do?!” I shrieked at him.

“Who are we kidding, Tori, Cresselia? We don’t stand a chance against him! He’s going to cover the world in darkness, trap everybody in an eternal nightmare! There’s nothing we can do!” He suddenly snapped.

I stumbled backwards, tears welling up in my eyes. I watched in shock as he slowly made his way to stand next to Darkrai.

“Mmm, you’ve made a good choice, Sparx.” He practically purred with satisfaction.

The Pokemon I’d trusted as my partner and my closest friend now refused to meet my eyes.

“Now on to you, Tori. When you choose to join us, our first order of business will be to take care of Cresselia there. We’ll make sure she can’t interfere anymore.” His last sentence held a tone of ominous finality.

Cresselia opened her mouth to speak eyes shining with desperation, but Sparx cut her off. “Please, come here. He won’t want just me.” He made a choking sound as if he were fighting back tears. “He’ll get rid of me. Please come here Tori, I don’t want to die.”

My body felt numb. I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t even trust my partner anymore. Or could I? My thoughts kept whirling around and around in my head. I wanted to protect my partner, but he had just betrayed me. Slowly, mechanically, I stepped towards Darkrai.

“The world of darkness is going to be wonderful…” My former partner whispered.

“Do you see now? Your trusted partner has seen the truth.” He purred. “Come now… and reign as lord in the world of darkness.”

I wiped away the tears that had been freely flowing down my cheeks and gritted my teeth.

“I…”

I suddenly heard a familiar voice in my head.

‘Don’t! Don’t be fooled, Tori!’

It was Sparx’s voice.

“That’s right… Sparx would never say something like that.” I said quietly. “Sparx would never give in to the likes of you! This is… This is just a nightmare!”

My world went black as I said the last word. When it returned to me, Sparx was no longer standing at Darkrai’s side, looking sullen and hopeless. Instead, I was looking up into the shadowy Pokemon’s piercing blue eyes. I took the opportunity and attacked him, sending him reeling backwards.

“You…” He growled. “You!” He lashed out at me in return, sending my flying backwards with a yelp.

Sparx caught me and braced me upright. “Tori, you’re okay now!”

I grunted and shook myself. “I was being tricked. Darkrai was showing me an illusion!”

“What of?” He asked.

“…”

I stayed silent. For a while there I had really believed that he would give in to Darkrai. I couldn’t just tell him that I’d doubted him so.

“Blast it! I was so close to success, so close! Is that your answer, Tori? Is it?!” He roared.

“Of course that’s my answer! Sparx would never agree to join the likes of you, and neither would I! I will never let your plan come to light, Darkrai! I’d rather die before I let the planet be paralyzed again!” I shot back.

“Humph… so be it. You’ve made a terrible mistake. I suppose there’s nothing left to say then, is there? I’ll just be rid of you now.”

The chamber darkened again, and when the light returned, there were several Pokemon surrounding us. We were completely surrounded.

“I knew it. I knew you’d do something like this, Darkrai!” Cresselia exclaimed.

“You shut your mouth! This is where I will take my throne as ruler of the world of darkness! A world of my own creation!”

“We will never submit to you, Darkrai! We accept your challenge!” I proclaimed. “Everyone, be ready to fight!”

I will not lie, I was incredibly tempted to stick at least five references to Xenoblade Chronicles in this. I'm really not that great at writing but have this anyway. My recent PMD drawings have been accompanied by stories anyway, so beep boop.

Completely off topic here, but what the hell is the timeline for the Kingdom Hearts games? I hear lots of positive things about that franchise and I kind of want to get in on it. I'll admit, I started by watching joshscorcher's LP of Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix on Youtube. There's Birth By Sleep, 385/2 Days, Recoded, hell I dunno. I'm just confused.
Edit: Whoops, forgot Chain of Memories.

Oh yeah, that little bit about me not trusting and doubting Sparx when in Darkrai's illusion? That's gonna be a thing I'm gonna write.
