Description GLaDOS was out in the shopping arcade in downtown Gekido City. She had decided that she had learnt enough about living in Japan from hanging out with Miku and Neru for weeks now and wanted to test out her newly acquired knowledge. After all, you can only really test out theories through experiments right?

So, leaving her Cores and her Cube behind with Miku (probably not a wise decision but whatever), she hitched a ride from Meiko who was heading downtown and began her experiments in the new shopping district not far from Miku's house.

One of the things she noticed was a vending machine. She had observed Miku and the others operate this type of machine on a few occasions. It should be a simple enough procedure. You simply need to make a choice, press the button for your selection and 'voila', the drink of your choice is dispensed at the slot at the bottom. This she thought would be easy to do and since she was rather thirsty anyway, a worthwhile experiment to carry out.

With these thoughts in mind she went over to the machine and scanned the available choices. A young man who seemed also to want to use the same machine approached and patiently awaited his turn. GLaDOS, made her choice and pressed the button.

Nothing happened ...

She pressed again.

Still nothing happened.

She then scanned the machine with a special scanner built into her headset. The vending machine seemed to be perfectly functional. So she pressed the button again.

Again nothing happened ...

She scratched her head. Then remembering something that Neru did with uncooperative machinery, she kicked it.

GLaDOS: OUCH!! (That smarted more than she had anticipated, obviously there was a trick to kicking vending machines. She prepared herself for another kick ...)
Young man: Excuse me ...
GLaDOS: Quiet, I'm busy here. This machine is malfunctioning. (She pulls back for another kick, and as before, other than causing pain to her foot, the machine still refused to cooperate. She scratched her head, trying to figure out another approach to the problem. She, GLaDOS, was not about to be defeated by this 'simplistic' piece of technology).
Young man: Try putting in money first?
GLaDOS: Money?
Young man: Yes, like in yens, coins or currency ...
GLaDOS: (Scratches her head for a moment, then produces her American Express Platinum Card which is accepted in more places than the 'other card' but obviously not by vending machines as there was no where to insert the card).
Young man: You will need coins for this machine, it doesn't accept credit cards ...
GLaDOS: But this is money. Much more efficient than coins and a lot more hygienic too.
Young man: Well ... yes ... but most people use coins when operating vending machines.
GLaDOS: Interesting. Very primitive and inefficient. (Pouting in a very cute way).

A few awkward moments of silence or contemplation on GLaDOS' part passes; the young man wasn't sure which it was. She was an attractive looking girl, rather cute, but very strange.

GLaDOS: (Completes her analysis of the situation and comes to a sudden realization - she didn't have any coins, as usually, these were carried by the Cube).
Young man: You've got no change right?
GLaDOS: (She turns around and looks at him for a moment and he sees for the first time how beautiful her eyes really were - definitely not quite human, but very beautiful). It is not my normal practice to carry unhygienic items on my personage. That is usually the 'duty' of my Cube.

But it is not with me today ...

So this is an interesting dilemma. I am wanting that drink, I have money to pay for it but it is in the incorrect form. In fact, I have enough money to buy the machine, but obviously that will not be sufficient for this equation to be solved.
Young man: (Thinks for a moment and then offers a solution). Would you allow me to purchase the drink for you?
GLaDOS: (Looks at him curiously for a long moment). Why would you want to purchase the drink for me?
Young man: Because you're pretty. (He states matter-of-factly, although in reality his heart was thumping hard).
GLaDOS: And what payment are you expecting in return? Obviously, you do not have the means to accept a credit card payment either.
Young man: Nothing, I'm not expecting you to pay me back, just allow me to do so as a gentleman.
GLaDOS: (She stares hard at him whilst mentally doing some complex calculations in her head, which concluded as 'Insufficient data to compute - need more data'). Very well, I will allow you to purchase the drink for me. I want that one.

Dutifully, the young man rummages in his pocket for the correct amount, drops the correct numbers of coins into the machine, fully aware that the strange girl was observing his every movement. He then presses the button for her selection, bends down to pick up the dispensed drink and turns around to hand it to her.

GLaDOS, places a hand on his shoulders preventing him from standing straight. Takes the drink and examines it in nano-seconds, then gives the young man a well placed kiss on the lips - taking him totally by surprise.

Young man: ?????!!!!!
GLaDOS: A favor must be returned. Since I do not have the means to pay you back for the drink ... I decided to employ another method. I hope you find the payment 'acceptable'?
Young man: Eh ... well ... yeah I suppose ...
GLaDOS: Excellent. Now here is my cell phone number. That seems to be the custom in this country whenever you meet people.

GLaDOS, calmly pulls back the ring tab on her can of soda. Drinks it down without stopping for air. Examines the empty can for a moment. Scans the surrounding for a suitable disposal site. Locates a recycle bin next to the vending machine and expertly throws the can into the bin. It's a perfect hit, much to the surprise of the young man who is still taken aback by the kiss.

Well, it wasn't an ordinary kiss.

For you see, GLaDOS had been watching soap operas and romance movies with Miku and Neru for the past few weeks. The 'kiss' was something that she had filed away in her memory banks to be 'experimented' on at a later date. So ... it was the type of kiss you see in mushy romance movies and certainly not something that you give to total strangers, but then of course GLaDOS didn't quite understand that now did she?.

Or did she ... ?

For you see, she suddenly turned away and started to quickly walk away. Not because she had anywhere to go in particular, but for some reason she could not fathom, she did not want him to see her face as 'something' dawned upon her and she was now, for the first time in her existence, blushing ... in fact she was completely red and was also feeling a little giddy and light headed.

By the time the young man recovered from his shock; and by now he had forgotten completely that he had originally come to the vending machine to buy a drink; he realized that he hadn't even asked her for her name. Still, she had given him her cell phone number ... well maybe he should call her?

GLaDOS in the interim had turned the corner. She found that she had to lean back against a wall to maintain her balance and her heart was beating very hard. She did a self-diagnostic. Nothing was wrong, except for her accelerated heart rate. This was curious. So composing herself as best she could she replayed the entire incident and came to an interesting hypothesis.

Could it be, that she, GLaDOS, was in love?

Well, one thing for sure, she was definitely not going to tell the Cube about what transpired. For some reason, that would be 'embarassing'? She was embarassed? How could that be possible? It just does not compute.

Then she received a text message on the cell phone. It was a simple message: 'Can I see you again?' She, responded without thinking: 'Yes'.

Once again, she found that her heart was beating so hard that she felt it would burst; but it was not an unpleasant sensation, in fact, she was really really curious how this would all end.

Was it possible, she thought, that this new equation had no logical solution? She really wanted to know ...

awwwww! :3 this is sooo cute! I luv it! U should make this into a series, it'd be really good, and a cool idea of GLaDOS living as a 'human' in the real world, falling in love and making friends XD u should think about that

There are other stories in the GLaDOS living in Japan series. Most are tied to her misadventures with Miku and gang, but there are others with her and just the Cube.

It's mentioned in the credits at the end of the description. The vending machine is a fixed asset. If you need a unit by itself, they have some on Bowlroll.net (search for them using the VPVP Wiki).

It's just called "Shopping District", which isn't much help. Look for it in ~amiamy111 's gallery - but that version is kinda defective and will need some adjustments made to it in the PMD editor.

cute, a romance begins for GLaDOS. Her assimilation into human emotion will be a good story point of interest.

By looking at GLaDOS, we actually can see a lot more of ourselves; well at least that's the approach that I'm trying to take.

Hmmmmm ... forgot about old Data, but since you brought it up, yes, it rather does follow a similar type of approach into looking at ourselves.

Emotions do not compute on logic systems? I suppose that makes sense because GlaDOS finds human reproduction to be inefficient

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to ElerosseAlcarin [2012-10-09 02:56:13 +0000 UTC]

Wherein emotions may or may not compute on logic systems (actually, I'll argue that they do); the human reproduction 'system' in it's entirety isn't as inefficient as it may first appear. The human courtship 'ritual' is complex and can lengthy, but balance that against a relationship that essentially needs to last a lifetime and in that context, from a genetic and hence, logical standpoint, it makes a lot of sense.

GLaDOS, as portrayed here, is on a 'quest' to understand humanity, but in the course of that process, I'm allowing her to become 'human'. Sometimes, to beg an analogy, to understand ourselves better, it helps to look at ourselves from the viewpoint of an outsider, like GLaDOS.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ElerosseAlcarin In reply to Trackdancer [2012-10-09 03:00:42 +0000 UTC]

I have to agree, but I'm just remembering something I thought I heard her say at one point

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to ElerosseAlcarin [2012-10-09 04:13:05 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, she would have problems understanding what's going on. It's one thing to be a mere observer, another to be an actual participant. Especially since GLaDOS thinks more like a computer with an advanced AI capable of learning, wherein, with a 'real' girl some of the 'programming' is already there if you follow my reasoning.
