Description Wasn't initially going to have a background and then this little forest cropped up and now I have no idea where he is. Division fights in all kinds of places, so he could be just about anywhere.
I wanted to really challenge myself to push the limits on this one. Though this hyper-realistic style will not be used in the comic itself because it's so time consuming, I figured it wouldn't hurt to practice drawing them in a more realistic fashion.
So here's Ethan, early-shift. The full view is worthwhile.
The trees were a brush I downloaded. I'm really sorry that I lost the link, or I would post it here O_O;

Edit: Now with bigger bricks because they were way too small

happens to me all the time! I stare at a picture so long I don't notice some of the smaller details.

This looks really great. I love little details, like his partially changed right eye! <3

Thanks I had to get a good reference for the wolf eye because I wanted it to be realistic looking even though it was going to be in a human face.

You definitely did a good job with it. Is it weird that I find it cute that his clawed hand looks like it's padded? XD

Is he a werewolf? Ethan is a part of a comic you're drawing right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TresMaxwell In reply to The-Night-Craft [2011-08-16 16:46:00 +0000 UTC]

I don't think that's weird His other form is quite cuddly, if you know him well. If you don't, I could see where he might be frightening.

He is from the comic, he's actually one of the lead characters. He wasn't a werewolf at the beginning of the comic, but encounters the wolf later that changes him. It's violent and terrible and he barely makes it through, much to the horror of his boyfriend.

TresMaxwell In reply to Gurlow [2011-08-05 15:13:24 +0000 UTC]

Expanding away Division 13 has actually eaten the Society O_O; Originally Society and Division were going to be parallel comics, but Division is more developed and I just don't have time to work on both of them at once, so Society will make guest appearances in Division frequently.

Never heard of Division 13, but I like the paw and wrist a lot.

TresMaxwell In reply to JoeyLiverwurst [2011-08-05 15:14:14 +0000 UTC]

It's a comic of my own creation. I'm working on producing it full scale, but I have to be prepared before I get started, so I'm doing a lot of pre-production work on it now.

A second pic of Ethan! His hand/paw looks very realistic, also the ripped shirt and his elegant (no, it's not the right word...but cat-like is also not quite right...but you know what I mean...I hope) position fits the theme very good.

And now...I really really want his haircolor!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TresMaxwell In reply to Yuki87 [2011-08-05 15:18:10 +0000 UTC]

This is the same pic, just zoomed out to fit the rest of it. There were such delicate details on his face that I really wanted to post just that on it's own.
I think I was most frustrated with the paw, but I'm satisfied with how it came out . I actually found a really good reference image for the pose and it helped me make it more realistic. I've been scouring for stock images for this kind of stuff. I can draw out of my head, but if I have a real reference, I can make it so much better.
I LOVE love LOVE his hair. About halfway through the planning process, he went from being a brunette to a redhead and I'm really glad I made the change. It suits his spunky personality. I dye my hair about that color too

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yuki87 In reply to TresMaxwell [2011-08-07 18:56:49 +0000 UTC]

You are right! It's the same picture!
The closeup of his face looks so much like a portrait that I didn't noticed it.

Even when I use references, the picture mostly ends up looking totally different ^^
But there also is a difference between drawing from a reference and creating a vivid picture with a reference. And the latter you can do wonderful! ^___^

I would have to bleach my hair for that because it's pretty dark brown. So bleaching and dying it every month seems a lot of stress, for me too XD

TresMaxwell In reply to Yuki87 [2011-08-08 00:46:36 +0000 UTC]

I used to suck using references, but I've been working really hard to draw what I see more accurately. It's taken a lot of work.
My hair is dirty blonde, so it takes to color well I guess I'm lucky in that sense.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yuki87 In reply to TresMaxwell [2011-08-08 18:10:18 +0000 UTC]

I think learning to draw more precise is really hard work!
I just recommended a book about drawing...well, it's more about learning to see the things as they are and than draw them. It's from Betty Edwards.
I guess it must be this, but my cover looks different, I have the german version but also the first edition (there are three I think).

I would be happy about every blonde tone ^^ But maybe I just have to wait, my hair's pretty grey by now

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TresMaxwell In reply to Yuki87 [2011-08-09 04:21:17 +0000 UTC]

I should look up that book, sounds like it could be a good one to own
If I stopped dying my hair, I would probably find grey ones, but I've been dying it since I was in high school so I don't really remember what it looks like anymore O_O;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yuki87 In reply to TresMaxwell [2011-08-09 15:17:39 +0000 UTC]

I've made some quick photos of my german edition, you can find it in my scraps.
There is the original title included and the year it was written. There are so many version I didn't know which of the english ones was mine.

I have an interesting e-book about writing M/M romance
And no, I think you write and draw wonderful, so please don't get that wrong and think I recommend that because I think you're a bad artist, okay?!

Oh...now that you mention it....I've seen my haircolor completely when I was 19 But I see the grey on the hairline ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TresMaxwell In reply to Yuki87 [2011-08-09 16:37:29 +0000 UTC]

I'll poke my head in scraps and take a looks

I would love to read that e-book. No matter who you are, a little advice is never bad! I don't take it offensively. I'm sure I could glean something from it that would make me better, more than likely, a lot of somethings

My hair is too light to see grey on the hairline.... but I bet I have it. My mom went grey early.

Yuki87 In reply to TresMaxwell [2011-08-09 17:30:19 +0000 UTC]

I'll upload it as soon as I've a little time and send you the link.
A writer I admire wrote some time ago that good writing can only be learned within a whole lifetime.

My mom too, but my dad >.< he still has his black hair...okay nearly, some grey strands here and their, but much less than me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TresMaxwell In reply to Yuki87 [2011-08-10 04:08:15 +0000 UTC]

Cool, thanks I definitely have to agree with that statement. Nobody knows everything. We have to keep learning and growing as we move through life, or we become stagnant.

My Dad's got some gray, but not as much as you would expect at his age. My grandmother has dark hair still, but my grandpa is completely white. Just not sure what'll hit me

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yuki87 In reply to TresMaxwell [2011-08-10 17:44:08 +0000 UTC]

So, the feature is ready [link] ^-^

Even if I know something and read it more often, maybe explained in different ways I get an even better understanding of it and can use it more easily. So I also keep reading about writing.

My granny had very dark hair even when she was over 60. That always looked so cool despite the old fashioned hairstyle.
But I'll never find out what my hair will look like than, I'm not going to stop dying it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TresMaxwell In reply to Yuki87 [2011-08-11 03:36:23 +0000 UTC]

Got it

True, sometimes something makes more sense when it's explained a different way. There's always something to be learned I've already started reading the book.

Me either, so I don't blame you there I'm a much cuter red-head than a blonde anyways!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yuki87 In reply to TresMaxwell [2011-08-11 13:42:45 +0000 UTC]

Good

I learn the best when I I hear/see it more often and in different ways.
The book is a bit...lengthy/tedious at the beginning through all the commentaries from editors and authors, but it get's better So around page 30 I guess.

I dyed my hair blond years ago and even though I liked the color...I looked dead, but in a bad way. Black hair makes me look like a goth and brown is, well, not so special. So there is only red....and green and lilac ^^

TresMaxwell In reply to Yuki87 [2011-08-11 15:40:50 +0000 UTC]

I wish I could have purple hair -_- Because of work, I can only dye my hair natural colors... I'm jealous of you lilac!!!

Yuki87 In reply to TresMaxwell [2011-08-12 09:27:08 +0000 UTC]

I have a picture where it looks like I have lilac hair but I don't. But it would bee cool.
What do you work? ^-^

TresMaxwell In reply to Yuki87 [2011-08-12 17:32:11 +0000 UTC]

I work at Build a Bear (kid's store) so we're not allowed anything out of the ordinary for hair, earrings, we can't have tattoos showing... I really would have purple hair if I could.
You should dye your hair purple for both of us

I saw one of these stores in a big mall of a neighbor city and thought the idea was so cool! *wants to be a child again* ^^

I'll upload the pic with the purple hair It really looks like I dyed it.

You should totally go into the Build a Bear It's a lot of fun. I don't know how different they are over there since they're franchised, but I really do enjoy working there.

You should

It's a long drive to the city where this shop is, but I'm sure I'll visit this shop when I have the chance to get there
I love the idea.

I'm still searching for the picture. It was made with my first mobile phone...so I guess I must have it on some CD. *searches* I _know_ I'll find it!

TresMaxwell In reply to Yuki87 [2011-08-14 22:55:28 +0000 UTC]

Don't drive out of your way to go or anything, just if you're over there you should check it out

I'm sure you'll find it. It was like my missing Heero/Duo smut

Yuki87 In reply to TresMaxwell [2011-08-15 21:12:03 +0000 UTC]

Oh it's always fun to go there, so I wouldn't mind to drive there. Maybe my parents agree to drive there with me someday again.

But my picture is...*counts* 8 years old But I have an idea where to look first.

TresMaxwell In reply to Yuki87 [2011-08-18 03:52:41 +0000 UTC]

I never would've found it. That's definitely a perk of being organized (which I could never hope to be).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yuki87 In reply to TresMaxwell [2011-08-21 18:40:27 +0000 UTC]

I'm....eh..., let's call it 'over-organized'. I have to add labels everywhere, have to make a plan before I start ^^ I'm horrible, I know.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TresMaxwell In reply to Yuki87 [2011-08-23 06:02:55 +0000 UTC]

Haha, that's the complete opposite of me. I shove things in a drawer and hope they'll resurface eventually.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yuki87 In reply to TresMaxwell [2011-08-24 21:28:40 +0000 UTC]

When I do that, I know I'll never work with this things again, because I can't find them or when it's about documents or such, I'll never understand the relation between them.
I don't trust myself I would stick a note to it and file it away

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TresMaxwell In reply to Yuki87 [2011-08-25 03:41:01 +0000 UTC]

i lose a lot of stuff O_O but I'm just not organized. The only thing I keep in some semblance of order is my art (both supplies and complete pictures) because it's very important to me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yuki87 In reply to TresMaxwell [2011-08-26 16:27:52 +0000 UTC]

I keep my ebooks and manga scans very tidy but I still can't find a lot of things ^^ So I think I have to organize it better. The only system that really works it that with my photos ^^
Btw. by looking at your pictures you can see they are important to you

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TresMaxwell In reply to Yuki87 [2011-08-26 16:51:43 +0000 UTC]

My art is definitely the best organized thing I've got. Actually, the 'My Pictures' file folder on my computer is the most organized thing on my computer. I've still got a folder or two that's a little disheveled that came off of someone else's computer, but once those are done, It'll be perfect again When you have as many reference pictures as I do, you HAVE to organize them or you'll spend days looking for something.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yuki87 In reply to TresMaxwell [2011-08-27 21:44:36 +0000 UTC]

Oh really? You have a lot of references? I thought...I don't know...you search for something when you need it. But this way sounds much better. I should start collecting writing references some time soon.
And yes, everything that has to do with writing is over-organized. Even the post-it's have post-it's.
