idk if anyones already told you this, but
that story was in the movie, Wristcutters: A Love Story.
tom actually played in that movie, and he told that story in the scene as well.
its a rather good movie, and a good performance by tom.

He has told this story more than once. It was in the movie "Wristcutters" where he told an audience of other deceased individuals, then it has appeared at a few live performances, he claims he once told it to his kids when approached with the question, "Dad, why don't you have a straight job like everyone else?" and it is a very inspiring story.

I've heard that story before, but not from Tom. My Gran told it to me as a child.
This is lovely; the story applies beautifully to him, and to the concept of your image. I just happened to be listening to "Long Way Home" when I found this, and it struck a chord with the desolate stretch behind him and the train tracks leading off to who knows where...

it reminds me of one of his songs Green Grass on his Real Gone album
when he say "you'll make a tree from me" this song is beautiful
