good to hear it, man. I love your ideas for some more Waits work. I've been contemplating doing a sculpting project based on him too, but it'll be some time off...if it happens, you'll hear about it, of course. heh.

Tom Waits is just an endless well of inspiration...I think a different, and interesting painting could be made each week...if I could get my ass in gear. lol!

and where the fu*k would this piece be if I hadn't of learned the path to Tom Waits from you-sai! ha! hey, by the way, have you found the Black Rider anywhere to buy?! all blasted Best Buy and Circuit city have are the same records over and over and over... I guess I'm just not much one for paying high prices.

take it easy dude

your gonna probably just have to buckle under and pay the big bucks, in store i think Barnes and Noble would be your best bet for the Black Rider

yeah, I figured as much...I'll have to check Barnes and Nobel, thanks man.

hey, I had found this a while back...some of the recordings are pretty decent.

talk to you later, dude

This is gorgeous. I'm a big Tom Waits fan, and I can see how this could be inspired by something he said/his music.. it's strange and beautiful, just like Tom. I love the lighting from behind, and the sort of grainy? effect... and great job with the railroad tracks.

Thanks! I appreciate the comments. that grainy look probably comes from the colored pencil. It seemed fitting enough to keep it rough and loose.

thanks again!

Awesome work... great colors and design. Love the textures and the general "feel" of this piece. Amazing stuff.

I like the story too; it'll have to go into my "parables" collection. Great way to explain why some people are just a little "different"!

EEEEEEEEE! I'm on a hunt for Tom. I'm in the process of making a giant painting/collage for him. Bone Machine is by far my favorite, but I do love them all!

wow, that's awesome! I wish you the best with your work of art for Tom!

Bone Machine was what really gripped me...realllllly takes you away into a fun world...which they all do, really...

damn bro! this is off the hook!
really dig that gravelly voice of waits. he's not half bad as an actor either.
but what cemented it for me was when he did that song with the replacements.
the title of which escapes me at the moment. geesh. sorry.
anyway,...sorry for the 'aside' there.
man. this is one of the best traditional pieces of surreal art i've seen in quite
a long while!
can't believe someone hasn't made this bad boy a daily dev yet. definately
BEYOND worthy!
nice work man!

TrevorGrove In reply to dholms [2005-08-13 03:26:42 +0000 UTC]

oh-thanks man. you're too kind, really!

Waits has quickly become a fav of mine, which is all the more exciting because I've only just entered his world...I haven't heard the song you speak of, but I've heard of it. gonna have to do a search.

appreciate that you like it, man. I'm still fond of the concept, but satisfaction with the final execution never seems to happen anymore.
take it easy!

dholms In reply to TrevorGrove [2005-08-13 13:17:26 +0000 UTC]

ahhhh. searched through my junk and found it!
'date to church'! it's a live song. (or it certainly 'sounds' live. heh.) it was the b-side to 'i'll be you' from
the 'don't tell a soul' cd. i first heard it on the replacement's anthology cd 'all for nothing'.
how would i know all this you ask? i worshipped the replacements man. i have ALL their crap. even their
vinyl back when they first signed with twin tone.
so anyway,...uhm,...yeah.
later bro.

wow, that certainly is Tom Waits. And not only does it look buzackly like him, but the whole picture, in all its surreality, is very Tom-Waits-ish.

thanks! Waits offers plenty of inspiration so the possibilities are really pretty endless! I'm happy to hear you feel its very waits-ish!!

I love this! It has certain elements that remind me of a friend's work. Both of you tend to mix different media together to create such outstanding pieces! And I especially love the addition of the gold leaf here. I have a photograph of a railroad track taken when the sun was just such that it made the tracks appear to be golden. This is just so creative! I like everything about it! Great job!

TrevorGrove In reply to gramarye [2005-08-11 15:34:24 +0000 UTC]

thanks graymarye- I'm kind of a freak when it comes to wanting to use every medium in a piece. I'm obsessed by the idea I guess.

I'm really glad to hear you like it! thanks so much!

You know Trev, I've seen some strange stuff. I've delved into deep regions of my mind, explored the vast abyss of screaming echoes and sacred steps into the doorways of memories that I hide from even myself, but this is FANTASTICAL HAUNTING. Although I am not a huge Waits fan, I admire the man and and his music. Only you could have captured something so...so...I don't have the proper description of the imagery, but damnit, you go it. Anyways, great work man. Looking forward to actually see you around though.

hahahahaha! fantasticaly haunting...that's a rockin' comment, my friend.

yea, wtf is up with me being such a recluse?! It hardly even dawns on me how out of touch I am, until six months go by. Did you land that job at Comic Quest? I don't know how you couldn't get a job there-you'd do them some good. anyway, like I always say, we'll have to meet up again dude. take it easy! and thanks, glad you dig the piece.

this is nothing short of the calibur of work ive come to expect from you trev. not to mention probably one of the best subjects (in my opinion) that you've worked with thus far. I adore tom waits, and all his works. I think you have captured his overall strangeness and personality fairly well with this piece. Super groovy stuff, would definately like to see it as a print

TrevorGrove In reply to abh0rsen [2005-08-11 00:59:08 +0000 UTC]

Tom Waits is awesome. I'd need to do twenty pieces before I even began capturing waits. he's so animated and varied in his music, that it's hard to think of a quintessential piece-you know? I'm really glad you dig it. print should be available by tonight or tommorow. just awaiting approval. the 18X24 one is $20, the 9X12 is $15

thanks man!
