Mako hit the water cleanly and let her momentum carry her down two meters before somersaulting into a downward glide, driven by the last of her dive’s kinetic energy. Drawing a deep breath she began the dolphin stroke propelling herself toward the calmer water of the depths below.

The sounds of the turbulent surface faded as she dove deeper, the colors shifting gradually as wavelengths of light were blocked or clipped by the water’s increasing depth. At two hundred feet, Mako noticed that the water had a odd smell to it. It was an unfamiliar underwater aroma, almost reminding her of ozone in air and it grew stronger as she went deeper.

At three hundred feet, Doris paused, treading water to maintain her depth and cocked her head slightly at a faint pinging sound. It was coming from above her and was growing louder. Curious she reversed into a slow ascent as the sound grew louder, adjusting her course toward the sound.

It was small, and she almost missed seeing it, as the source of the pinging, a small device about half the size and in the shape of a AAA battery, drifted past her.

“What do we have here?” she thought snatching it as if sank in front of her. The tiny cylinder was smooth and it had no identifying markings on it. “Too much to hope for it would be signed I suppose,” she noted. “Something for Spenser to figure out,” she thought as she gradually increased the pressure between her index finger and thumb, careful to deform it as little as necessary to silence it.

Mako was already moving downward again as she considered her options. Surface to investigate the source of the micro sonar-buoy, or continue the dive. If there was something on the surface, that was for Spenser to handle. Her job was to look for …for what? Whatever ‘it’ is, it was obvious she wasn’t the only one curious about it.

Deeper and deeper she went, and the light faded quickly to inky blackness. She was about to switch on the LED light incorporated into her dive suit when it caught her eye. There was a light moving about below her. “Curiouser and curiouser,” Mako thought as she changed her course moving silently toward the light.

About fifty yards from the faint glow, Doris heard and felt another sonar ping; this one more familiar to her. The type of sonar used to detect and track.

“Bollucks,” she thought as the light extinguished.
