egyptian god of evil and chaos. the problem with set is that the animal, whom head he has is not a particular animal. it`s a mix of jackal, anteater and god knows what else.Related content

Set's head is based off of the wild black pig, or thyphonian animal in ancient Egyptian mythology. Originally, Set is from a pretty early group of deities from other countries in the Middle East. Set was from Libya, with their lighter skin color.
Pretty impressive artwork to show how Set is of chaos and evil.
I'm working on a story where Set is more than he seems to be. Set will be a bit rude and rather formidable as a warrior.

Some experts say that the animal that his head is based off of is a Fennec fox, makes sense with his large ears.

Evil was actually never fully a part of his portfolio, Murder was and that was after schism between the cults that favored him and those of Horus. Storms, chaos, foreigners (the demonetization of Set was also likely to have occurred due to foreign occupation being a downer), and the desert, murder to if you so choose.
I do love this picture though, it shows a magnificent level of ferocity.

He is also the one who defends Ra from Apep (A.K.A. Apophis) the chaos serpent during Ra's journey through the underwrld. He finnally kills the creature by bashing his skull in with a mace just before every morning (ever notice how the sunrise is red?). Don't ask me how he keeps coming back.

Of this I am aware, the reason is Apep is a demon (possibly god) that exists outside the natural order. Apep returns because it doesn't really die, Set (but more usually Sekhmet) can be protectors against things like Apep, neither are particularly "nice" deities but they're better than the alternative. Although a lot of that comes from the Ogdoad which is so old and has been translated (and mistranslated) so many times that getting a bead on it is pretty difficult.

But after Apep was slain, Set pretty much took the role as representation of evil, didn't he?

Apep wasn't slain per se', it came back every night because it was immortal, (outside the order of life and death) Set was just kind of a boastful ass outside of the whole murder of Osiris thing. And the implication is (much like Apollo in greek mythology) he mellowed later in history, as he was often depicted crowning the new Pharaoh with Horus. This was likely due to the reconciliation between the cult of Horus, which held dominion over upper Egypt, and the cult of Set, popular in lower Egypt. You see a less dramatic version of this with Bast and Sekhmet as early on they fulfilled the same role but as the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt happened Bast became a less overt figure and went from depicted as a lioness to being depicted as a house cat. Muddying things further the Greeks conquered Egypt even later in history and attempted to draw parallels with their own gods, which for the most part wasn't super dramatic as the pantheons had often commingled due to trade. But Set's only real allegory in Greece was Typhon which was a straight up destruction monster. A role more akin to Apep but Typhon was associated with storms and monsters that had no real life counter part (similar to the Set animal, which has also been called a typhonic beast).
Sorry this got super duper wordy but mythology is one of my big passions in life.

Well, that does make sense.
And back then, killing your own brother was sort of ok in Mythology, I guess.
Don't worry about the wordy reply, I don't mind reading, heh.

Well, sex and blood were kind of the weird staples in mythology.

wow gory but awesome picture it really shows how evil he really is. you know it's weird he's the God of evil and chaos and it's said he was the one that chopped Osiris up and scattered his pieces all over Egypt but I still like him mostly because he's also the God of animals

I love the steaks of blood above his elbow. I assume it was the dead man's fingers grasping at him? Such an awesomely subtle touch. Anyway, excellent work.

"In art Set was mostly depicted as a fabulous creature, referred to by Egyptologists as the Set animal or Typhonic beast, known as a Typhon, with a curved snout, square ears, forked tail, and canine body, or sometimes as a human with only the head of the Set animal."
Taken from Wikipedia because I'm a lazy bastard with access to an internet database of general knowledge.
I really like Set, both in appearance and role. You've done a great job depicting him.

Funny thing about Set. He used to a be a good god before invaders from other regions of Egypt demonized him in favor of Osiris. Awesome picture, though.

Well actually the Egyptians demonized him, Set was the God of the Desert, Storms and thus foreigners and when one group known as the Hyksos briefly conquered Egypt they claimed Set as their patron deity (due in no small part in that he was similar to their own chief god) and made worship of all deities forbidden. When the Egyptians finally got ride of the Hyksos, they saw Set as the symbol of evil and thus he partially took the place of Apep the Serpent of Darkness and Chaos who in earlier beliefs he fought in order to protect Ra; however as he was made evil in the new belief system this role was given to Bastet.

BEST RENDITION! It pisses me off cuz I don't know what the hell he is. Maybe he's not an animal but a demon or monster or whatever and the Egyptians just have their way of depicting them.

egyptians created their demons by combining features of different animals, they probably didn`t invent anything new. to see what i mean go here: [link] so we know that set is an animal or several animals combined, but what are they, we can only guess.

Like how the Greeks had the chimera, manticore, etc. Or how Europeans (I think) had demons/satan (man with goat legs and horns).

how would that make sense? horus is the son of osiris and isis, with both parents being human (well, osiris is a zombie, but nevermind) and yet he has a falcon head (in his adult form anyway - in his childhood years he was depicted as a regular kid). egyptian mythology didn`t make a lot os sense (;
