Wow, the thing I really like about this tutorial (aside from the fabulous content and the humerous writing) is the little details you add that aren't crucial to the tutorial itself, but that make it so much richer and just so 'you'. Like the little bird for example.
Can you tell me more about the acrylic ink pen? I've tried a few online art stores here (new zealand) and we don't seem to have them. Do you think they might be called something else maybe? Can you describe them to me? I take it they are different to felt tip pens...?

Well, they're made by Faber & Castell, and they're waterproof, which is the really important bit. They look like this: [link]

Ok thanks for your help. Looks like I might have to try to buy them over the internet or something.

I have them here in Sweden, at a VERY reasonable price as well. And I can only agree that they are awesome, they even come in a brownish shade wich is so soft and easier on the eye then stark black - altho I use them together a lot! If all else fails, I'll help you if you want to.

Wow. Now I can more fully appreciate your art knowing how you go about doing it.
Very cool.

...I am in awe. T-T
I must learn more of this tecnique as I journey further into the world of Amazingly Cool Artwork. It's just too cool not to.
...Interestingly enough, I had a day where I thought about becoming a Tibetian Monk. I don't think that's what I'll aim for as my profession, but it really does sound like an interesting line of work.

Holy cow, or holy white acrylic inkwash (how ever you choose to see it), this is helpful! The materals list is especially useful, and it was so cool to not only watch the progression of the colors, but also how the drawing and outlines. Seeing the little tweaks here and there really helped me to get a better understanding of how a piece of art can evolve. Thanks a bunch for this.

Rockin' awesome job. My favorite tutorial I've found on DA. I especially love the cheap-hints. But to be fair, you really can't claim to be that much of a cheap bastard while owning Painter.

Well, yeah, but I had to save up for it for quite awhile...

Fair enough. It just doesn't seem quite in keeping with the general "yay cheap!" attitude.

Well, I got free Painter Classic bundled with my tablet drivers when I coughed up enough dollars for a little Wacom. Uh. Which obviously isn't as good as the full version and all, but it definitely works if you're just going to be using it for sketching on the computer.

Pyrra In reply to kehrli [2006-05-26 14:49:33 +0000 UTC]
Well, I already have a Wacom, but I think it only came with a lame version of Photoshop. And I already have a Photoshop 7.

kehrli In reply to Pyrra [2006-05-26 19:04:15 +0000 UTC]
Ah, well. At least the painter portion of the tutorial isn't really the point of it all - I am pretty sure you can do the whole thing without ever touching a computer until you have to upload. (Unless you count "using the projector" as using a computer).

Pyrra In reply to kehrli [2006-05-26 23:28:20 +0000 UTC]
True, I would just love to have Painter, though. Not because of this tutorial, but because I'd like it in general.

It all seems so suddenly within my grasp. If I had paints, canvases, a cool projector, prismacolor pencils, and all the other stuff on the list. I can try to adapt this over into digital art ayering, though.

I really agree with the whole white acrylic being an artist's best friend...
I will have to try this technique sometime, once I get waterproof ink... i haven't inked anything i've painted for a while; bad experience with not-waterproof ink

I find it a true testament to your talent that not only do you have a wonderful system for making your art, but you can actually explain how you do it to others!! My painting style goes: 1. prep surface being painted on. 2. Put paint on brush. 3. ???. 4. Painting is done!
This is a great look into just one of infinate number of styles of painting, and I just love how you do it. The style is so complimentary to the subject matter, loose, fun, and it pops. I have saved this tutorial, and I think I will try out your style one day, and see what I can come up with!!
Thanks!!

Wow cool...but way too much mixing of the medias for me to try Inks, colored inks/washes and colored pencil is enough for me.

-WHOA! ...you're technique you showed us here is really, your technique (although I have run across someone else who also sketches with their tablet first, but that's not the point...)
You have got to be THE FIRST artist on DA who doesn't seem to care overly-much about their Inking and STILL makes their final product look good regardless of that- wow! ...thanks, that's kind of a breath of fresh air and I will try to be more loose and free (I love my detail, clean-ness, and meticulosity though) and try not to care too much about the inking if my main goal is to slap down some paint on a work.
guh... (and I love tutorials +good "how to" books, so into my favorites this will go! -whee!- XD~)
Thank you for sharing!
-Daiko~
(be well.)

Thanks for the insight! I've used opaque projectors, colored pencil over paint, manual gradients, etc. but this has really inspired me to bring all these elements together on a single piece. (when given the choice I usually shy away from mixed media)
There was something I was hoping you could elaborate on: applying the white arcylic ink. What did you use(brush?), and how much did you put on?

ursulav In reply to dragon-dan [2006-05-11 19:24:53 +0000 UTC]
You can use either a small watercolor brush, or a very small filbert--both have their place. I like the filbert for fur, and the watercolor brush for spots and highlights and linework. Either one'll work, though.

Heh. Beats the hell out of my tutorial in which I simply advise everyone (regarding their reference image) to 'blur the holy crap outta it' and advise the art purists to go paint a melted clock..
Somehow, this seems far more friendly and eloquent. *g*
Nevertheless, tis a rockin tut! Have you tried it out in Painter? And if so, how's it translate over?

I'll add myself to the chorus here: wonderful tutorial, very inspiring, makes me want to dash out and start painting things. ^__^ If only I didn't have a bad habit of storing heavy objects on top of my scanner, I might even actually follow that impulse! (Art that cannot be put on the Internet makes me sad.)
