THANK YOU for the bit about precut mats. As someone who works in a framing department, it's annoying the amount of times people come in with an 11x15 print and want to know why it doesn't fit into a standard 11x14 frame.

Thanks for the tutorial! This is a very interesting technique. Did you learn it somewhere or is this technique something you figured out on your own?

Nope, cooked it up on my own, which is why I wrote the tutorial. *grin*

The words GREAT GOOGILY MOOGILY comes to mind when I looked at this tutorial! Man, this is sweet and I love the process steps and how you've broken them up. Tell me though, I loved the brilliant orange/umber colors in the background in the first few steps and then they kinda' got lost in the last few steps. Is this just because as you went along your scanner started picking up more colors thereby lessening the intensity of the piece or was there really a dulling of the background due to more scribblfying on your part? Just wondering. THANK YOU FOR THE TUT.
I am definitely going to have to try this technique. I've got some watercolor and oils that are just dying to be used. Goodbye digital, hello traditional!
OH! I almost forgot, where can I find a Sir Jr. Mc-Trace-A-Lot?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ursulav In reply to Hobbit1978 [2006-05-11 12:39:02 +0000 UTC]

It's a little from column A, a little from column B. The scanner tends to burn things to a kind of saturated red if left to its own devices, so the colors aren't quite true initially. Of course, you could probably achieve that color easily enough--red earth and burnt umber acrylic ink are really intense shades, so if you wanted it, I suspect it's achievably in real life.

And any craft store should have some version of the Sir Jr. Mc-Trace-A-Lot thing somewhere...

Hobbit1978 In reply to ursulav [2006-05-12 11:11:21 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the info. I've been doing some murals recently and using this ancient bohemoth projector from circa 1955 that a friend found at a university auction some years ago. It's great and has a really intense bulb, I think some ungodly wattage of 400 or something, but the thing is so heavy and unwieldly to cart around that I'm looking to upgrade...or downgrade depending on how you look at it. I'll be sure to find a Sir Jr. Mc-Trace-A-Lot or similar. If the Sir. Jr. Mc-Trace-A-Lot does not really exist I am going to come up with a fake ad illustration for it just because it sounds so goofy and fun!

Thank you.

Good gods, I can't believe you had the patience to scan every step like that. Tis what keeps me from every doing tutorials. That, and personal lack of the idea that I'm practiced enough here... O.o

Lovely, though, it's always intriguing to see how artists work.

I just read the whole thing, and it sounds really good I dont have a lot of real media colors (I've only got the Caran D'asche colorpencils...also used for watercoloring)...but will they be enough?...I'm really missing acryllic colors...they never stop testing your skills.

but anyway, thanks for sharing this wonderfull turtorial with us, I'll be looking forward to try it

ursulav In reply to vonPipkin [2006-05-11 12:41:24 +0000 UTC]

I'd suggest at least laying out for a coupla PITT pens and the white acrylic ink if at all possible--they're not all that expensive, and it's very much worth it. As for the colorpencils--well, the problem is that if you wash over the top, you'll lose your scribble! But it might be doable, if you're careful and very very sparing with the water.

Wonderful to see a tutorial from you, it looks excellent on the first read through... I especially like your realistic tips for materials--I know I've saved a lot of time by specifically printing things to fit in 8x10 pre-cut mats, while all my friends were whimpering as they picked which part of their 8.5x11s to hide.

"What type of pencil do you use for sketching?"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ursulav In reply to mangam8 [2006-05-11 12:43:53 +0000 UTC]

Plain 'ol mechanical, most of the time. If I'm doing a piece entirely in pencil, I'll drag out all the shiny 6B and 2H and ebony and whatnot, but for the sketch, I just use a mechanical.
