Description It's done! Check out "Rescue at Orinackra" at [link]

---------------

The Moldy Crow, from the game Star Wars: Dark Forces.

Used by mercenaries Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors on various missions, the Moldy Crow fast and manoeuvrable, making it perfect for quick, silent mission insertion and retrieval.

I always imagined this ship as being similar to Han Solo's Millennium Falcon: Ancient, heavily modified, and probably stolen, yet ultimately a reliable (some might say "lucky") ship.

---------------

My first (successful) 3D Modeling project, now textured and bump-mapped!

Since my earlier WIP model (link below), I've learned about UV unwrapping and texturing with Photoshop. I've added the base hull texture, stripes, weathering (burn marks, scratches, etc), and other miscellaneous details (like the landing skid under the cockpit). All textures are now entirely made by me.

I originally made the model to import into the space sim X3: Terran Conflict. I'm using several 1024X1024-pixel maps (and one 2048X2048 for the main hull!) which would probably slow down the game a bit, so consider this a sort of "showcase" version. I'll likely reduce the texture quality for the game version.

My next step with this version is to learn particle and other special effects, to add and engine glow and lighting. With a nice space background, I think this could make a pretty nifty wallpaper, don't you think?

I hope you all enjoy, and as always, I'd love to hear any suggestions.

Always loved this ship, really nice to see it rendered it good 3d.

Very nice. That ship always was interesting. Damn shame the DF shooter games were made prior to the 'mini-game' era or we might have had a couple vehicle segments to pilot it. Classic games though and nice work on the picture.

Thanks. I can't say I'm a huge fan of the overuse of minigames, but It would have been a lot of fun to fly nevertheless. Actually, I modeled it originally to add to a space fighting/trading sim called X3: Terran Conflict.

No doubt not a fan of overuse...something more or less along the lines of the AC130 gunship mission in CoD:MW would have been a barrel of laughs.

You're right. It would have been neat to have Jan flying in how pursuit through the airways of Nar Shadaa, while you man the turret on the bottom or something.

Awesome design, dude!!!! I love that ship, I love the JK saga. And Kyle is the best of the SW Universe. Just one thing, if you don't mind...could you do some scratches or blurry parts in the red paint? I remember the Moldy Crow looking older than this. But it's an amazing job you've done. Kudos, man!

Glad you like it. Acually, check out my finished (for now) work here: [link] . I added some more weathering to the hull texture, as well as adding specular-mapping, which makes the burn-marks I already had on it more visible.

And I agree. The Moldy Crow is one of my favourite SW ships as well, and Kyle is totally awesome. You know, a group is remaking the original Dark Fores in the Jedi Academy engine?

I'll check you new version new. And about the Dark Forces remake, I saw a lil' bit, but it wasn't completed I think. Keep this fine work of yours, man!

Dude, this keeps making me want to do my own version!!

One little bit of a critique though. I wish some of the detail was painted into the color map, instead of just the bump. It makes the whole thing look a little like a toy.

Vanguard3000 In reply to KypFox [2010-03-15 17:35:42 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like it.

The texture of the bump-map is actually based on the colour map. So, the hull-metal texture is both coloured and bumped. Or do you mean other detail? I did put some burns/dirt/scarring all over the hull, but they don't show through a whole lot when the whole thing is rendered. The easiest place to spot this wear and tear is around the engine intakes, and on the red pinstripes. Is that the kin of detail you mean? Should I make it more noticeable?

And for the record, I would totally love to have a toy of this ship.

The Engine intakes work well enough, but I think everything else could use a little more contrast or something.
Too much of a flat brown/flat red feel.

I think I've seen a few lego models of this ship, but that might be too dorky. (ok, not really)

Vanguard3000 In reply to KypFox [2010-03-22 17:19:38 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I've just made some specular maps for the ship, so the marks, burns, etc, won't reflect as much light, and will thus show up a little better.

Thanks, man. It's amazing how a really nice texture can hide some of the stuff you thought didn't look right on the model.

(But I did round out the nose a bit before making the texture as well)

Actualy, I grew up with JKII Jedi Outcast. So I was going to do the Raven's Claw. It's in the big idea hopper of CAD projects that I need to get around to doing. Mabey I should keep a list of this "idea hopper".lol Man JKII is still a great game. It still holds up to todays games. I remember I was like, "OMG!!! They have moving mouths!!!"lol

Vanguard3000 In reply to ComputerGenius [2010-03-10 06:25:39 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I had the same impression with JKII. It was one of the first FPSs that had dynamic shadows, as well, although my PC was too slow to run the game with shadows, and they were really choppy looking on my friend's PC.

I have a special folder with all of my potential projects. Whenever I think of something I'd like to model, I automatically make a sub-folder for it, and find a few reference images to throw in there. That way, I won't forget about it.

ComputerGenius In reply to Vanguard3000 [2010-03-10 15:51:05 +0000 UTC]

thats a good system. Mabye I'll try that. Thanks. And yeah. At the time I was playing it, I was running it on a second-hand 2002 HP that sounded like a C-17 taking off. I think it had a ATI video card and a Intel Celeron I. The dynamic shadows wer really bad on the NPCs. The were so jagged. I had so much fun with that game. it was like my first very own PC game. The first one I bought with my own money. I remember I was in this game store with my dad and I was like "OMG! This looks sooooo cool!" So much replay value. Especialy the online part. This was my first time with a in-game console. It was like I could do any thing with the game. The ingame sutscenes were like watching a star wars movie on my computer! I didnt have a DVD player or drive. It was like the future. And it had a great plot. Unlike the sequal JK3. I mean JK3 had great improments over it predasesor but the plot was total lacking. It made Rouge Squadron 3D's loosly kluged plot look good. Man I've got to go dig out JK2 from the archives and give it another go for old times sake. Hope it runs on Vista.LoL

Vanguard3000 In reply to ComputerGenius [2010-03-10 17:46:47 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I'm sure you won't have too much trouble running it. I'm pretty sure there are still multiplayer servers for that game and everything.

I agree though, I didn't like Jedi Academy as much. Not only do you no longer play as good old Kyle, but I found the missions were too short, overall. It was neat that you could choose your missions, but they just seemed like little snippets of something that should have been larger or more in depth.

Dark Forces (The first one) was the first game I had on CD, and it was really what got me into Star Wars in the first place. At first, I had just thought of it as Doom with laser guns, but it piqued my interest in the films.
