Description
The environmentalists lost. While man turned his head toward the stars, he didn't notice the ground rotting beneath his feet.War. Overpopulation. Pollution. The last three centuries were particularly destructive to the planet. The Earth was cut, again and again, and its resources plundered to fuel the New Space Race - itself a desperate effort to abandon our dying home. By the time we had found new homes on Mars, and the further colonies on the moons of Jupiter, there was precious little left except waste. The ice caps melted as the deserts grew, and the people left behind were forced into the already crowded cities. Crime rates, and the sales of filter masks, skyrocketed.
No one knows where the Omega-Thirteen "Ultraflu" came from - or at least, no one's willing to say for sure. Some blame terrorists. Others, God. Many believe it was released by the now-independent and prolific Mars Federation to assert power over its former handlers on Earth. Fire and radioactive cobalt dust contained the plague. Barely. The world's population hasn't numbered in the billions since.
Today, in 2275, the planet remains under quarantine, enforced by thousands of drone fighters stationed on orbital buoys, and the disheveled Lunar-Terran Federation remains effectively a third-world nation, economically dwarfed by the Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn Federations. At a time, some believed only the best of humanity escaped Earth to colonize the Solar System, while the rest were left to rot. Maybe being a bounty hunter has made me bitter, but as I look around me, it seems increasingly evident that rot at the core invariably spreads outward.
-Journal of a bounty hunter
----------------------------------------------
This piece (and the accompanying story) was inspired by the fantastic sci-fi series Starhunter. In particular, the episode "The Divinity Cluster" depicts Earth as a restricted area due to plague and pollution, forgotten by the rest of humanity.
The planet's surface is a high-res satellite image of the Earth, doctored in Photoshop to look polluted and "darker". The planet itself, and the buoy and drones were modeled in 3DS Max. All other textures made from scratch in Photoshop.
Total time to make, not including procrastination, would be about seven hours. You can see the base colour map for the future earth here: [link]
Made for a weekly contest for #3d-asaurus' .
[edit May 16/2010] Lightened the overall scene, making it more visible on all monitors.

Very interesting take on the worst case scenario about our future. There's also the other end of the spectrum where everything was made to look sweet and dandy by an absolute totalitarian government. There'd be laws limiting family size (not a bad idea), oppression of pronatalist religions (also not bad), eugenics etc.

Thanks, man. Hey, we all have our moments of inspiration.
I like your planet design work as well, by the way. I can't seem to vote on your poll, due to some weird DA problems, but consider this a vote for a "destroyed world".

I think that is where I am leaning and here's why: it fits well with this contest: [link]
Maybe you should enter too; space art has many possabilites for this

Cool, I'll certainly consider it. The last contest I entered (which I actually submitted this piece for) didn't go so well. But that doesn't mean I'm out for good.

An excellent idea. I would be tempted to put some little details on the planet itself to maybe suggest large chemical fires burning out of control etc, but still its a great concept

I was thinking of making a big crater or glassy bit somewhere, as if the whole area had been slagged, but thought it may not really be noticeable.
I actually did alter the original satellite photo to look like the ice caps had melted and the deserts had grown, though. It was mostly visible in the Sahara and Gobi deserts, but you can see it a bit in the western U.S.A. and in Brazil as well.

I really like this scene. The details put into making Earth polluted is outstanding. Even the atmosphere is black. The story was a very nice addition as well. Also the space buoy is very nicely rendered. Nice roughened-up like feeling.
Beautiful job and a wonderful concept.

Thanks. I'm glad you like it. I actually had some trouble lighting the scene because the atmosphere layer actually absorbed light rather than reflecting it!

I've been getting a lot of this, but I can see it fine... is it possible I just have my monitor brightness too high?
Should I lighten it? Will that ruin the mood?

pixelworlds In reply to Vanguard3000 [2010-05-16 06:56:45 +0000 UTC]
I can BARELY see it! Are there lights in the actual scene? You can add a few spot lights to increase the visibility but keep the mood?! Maybe your monitor is off? Is the brightness on it around 50%?

Whoa! I just did a monitor gamma setup on my machine... I see now why everyone thinks it's so dark!
I think I'll try brightening it with Photoshop, and re-upload it.

Very well executed!
The image really captures the feeling of a dark, dead, polluted planet and the accompanying story, with the hunter's inner thoughts, describes the feeling perfectly!

Thanks. I'm glad you like it. I've always liked writing, and while a picture tells a thousand words, it's always nice to have a few more to "set the mood" of the picture.

We're definitely in agreement there!
Sometimes you need an image to portray and clarify your words and sometimes you need words to explain the image. I'd say they go hand in hand in this and it's interesting to see such a combination of forces!

Vanguard3000 In reply to zipper [2010-05-12 02:39:24 +0000 UTC]
I know things should realistically be brighter, but I was going for a darker theme on this. I wanted to play around with the atmosphere effects to see what I could come up with, to emphasize the "deadness" of the planet.

I love both the piece and the story that goes with it. Both are very realistic, and I hope if this does happen it won't be until 2275, so I don't have to see it. Great job!

Glad you like it. if you like this sort of thing, I highly recommend the show Starhunter, which is partly where I got inspiration for this piece. You can watch it for free on YouTube.
I hope it doesn't happen, either. On the other hand, living on Mars would be pretty cool...

haha I agree. Living on another planet would be cool. Either on Mars, or on Jupiter's moon, Europa. It'd definitely be an experience I wouldn't want to miss out on.
