Description
My more boring tutorial about lines and paths: fav.me/d2bkxy7A list of helpful keyboard shortcuts: www.designzzz.com/hidden-photo…
Tutorial for beginners about good ol' Photoshop. I use the CS version here. Oh, and I noticed I kept saying "I'll explain that part later" but I never do... sorry. Ask questions about those subjects I don't touch on if you wish!
2009 EDIT: So uh, I've noticed some people asking me about how to use layers and how to colour in subjects... I'd just type "coloring in Photoshop " into deviantART's search bar and you'll get a multitude of techniques. Everyone goes about using Photoshop to paint differently. Many people have their opinions and ways of going about it, so if you stumble across something that just confuses the hell out of you, either study it until you understand, or move on and discover your own way. But still feel free to ask questions to me, of course, ha ha.
Word of advice:
PHOTOSHOP
DOES NOT
BITE
Screw around with the program! Don't be a wuss! Just don't do anything to uninstall the program, and you'll be just fiiiiiine. You can always go back to the default settings.
2010 EDIT: I've noticed a lot of young aspiring artists have been favoriting this. If you need help with art, or want to look through other tutorials on a variety of subjects, go to this group:
Conceptart.org also had a very useful forum!
2020 EDIT: Please buy Clip Studio Paint instead lol www.clipstudio.net/en/

You can use levels to adjust the image to take away the grain of the paper, leaving just the darker lines. Your line art will have to be pretty dark to do this though, so I recommend using ink or something.
To get to the levels adjustments go to Image > Adjustments > Levels. Or just press ctrl+L to get there. Play around with the little slider arrows below the graph, it's pretty self explanatory.
Or if that doesn't work easily, you can always select the line art using the magic wand tool. It's best to do this after you've adjusted the levels even a little, to reduce the visibility of any grain or unwanted marks.
There's a myriad of other ways to do this, I would search around on dA for a good tutorial that's more... updated. This was written years ago, and I haven't read it for a long time, so sorry if my explanation above doesn't math up with my old tutorial.

Sure thing, but I can't guarantee I can explain everything back, since I'm no professional. Just tell me what kind of platform you are running it on and what version of photoshop it is and how long you've been experiencing it for.

Vierdz In reply to M3lanch0ly [2009-02-10 23:20:47 +0000 UTC]
Oh ok, that's a decent version, though I'm not too familiar with it. I'm guessing it's similar to version 9, which I'm more experienced with. So how are you having problems with layers? Care to elaborate?

Hmmm... Actually, I'm already having problems with the lineart itself.

Ah, are you trying to colour it in?

Vierdz In reply to M3lanch0ly [2009-02-20 00:26:37 +0000 UTC]
Well uh... here, maybe this might help.
1. open the document
2. double click on the background layer in your layer window
3. when a smaller window pops up press OK
4. set that layer to multiply
5. create a new layer
6. click and drag the new layer beneath the one with your line art on it
7. draw on that blank layer with colour and stuff
this is the super simple beginners way, and I usually don't recommend it any more, but it's quick and easy. The other way has to do with selecting the line art using channels and stuff to "cut it out". I can explain that for you if you want.

lol I have some input on this subject, too ^^
I've got the Wacom Intous as well; the smallest size is 4x6 and it costs around $200 or so. (If you check out the site here [link] , I think there's some sorta deal going on that I tragically missed lol). If you are really into drawing and want to try some digital work, I really reccomend the Intous. Although I've never tried any bigger sized tablets, the 4x6's size isn't a hindrance to me at all, and fits nicely on my desk. ^^

I recommend getting a wacom brand; I use an intuos 3. [link]
The special thing about it is that it has tilt sensitivity, to give your brushes (when you use them in photoshop, painter, and other programs) an artistic feel. I'd get a Graphire [link] if you want to be a bit more basic, it doesn't have tilt sensitivity and has less steps of pressure sensitivity. They all use USB I think. Order one offline from the site if you want one that isn't used, but I think you can get a cheaper one offa e-bay. Graphires are cheaper than Intuos as well, ha ha. Graphire wireless will be around 250, but with shipping it might cost more. I think just the regular Graphire is a bit cheaper though. Oh and the price also depends on how big the tablet is... personally I wouldn't get the smallest, but I wouldn't get the largest either because it'd just be hard to get it onto your desk or carry it around with ya. I have an Intuos 6x8, and it cost around 300 at the time. I've had it for about... 3 years..? and it was well worth the money! But whatever you do, be nice to the usb cable, if it gets too tweaked or damaged it won't work. And even then, I have to re-install the tablet software every time I reboot. Oh, and you get some other programs with the tablet as well, I think I got an older version of Painter and Photoshop Elements, and some photo editing program.
Sorry for the late reply!

Great work
for someone getting and using photoshop for the first time, which do you think would be the best version?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Vierdz In reply to Loucathwil [2008-10-03 00:30:36 +0000 UTC]
Thanks.
Version 7 is still widely used and probably more simple and straight forward compared to CS2 or CS3. CS3 has a different look to it, and I find it's easier to work in because it gives you more room to see your image. I'd get CS2 and try it out, then try out CS3 and see if you like the change or not. Borrow the disk from a friend or something first, so you don't waste money if you don't like it, ha ha...
Sorry for the late reply, I'm very lazy!
