The Unaligned is the collective name given to the hundreds of thousands of microstates that fill up the space not controlled by the major empires of the Ancerious galaxy. Individually these states are minuscule, the majority of them not even having control of their whole continental landmass, let alone their entire planet or multiple systems. Their space fleets rarely surpass a dozen ultralight ships whereas the empires command armadas of thousands. And much like their ships the general technological level and quality of life of these myriad societies lags behind that of the empires; the overwhelming majority of them never achieved so much as powered flight on their own before they were given the tools of interstellar travel by private corporations who were looking for cheap labour. Whereas the empires arrived from their own galaxies, most of the Unaligned represent Ancerious' natives. Although many trade agreements, customs unions, mutual defense pacts and political treaties span thousands of these unaligned microstates there is not a single political structure that unites them all, meaning the flag represents an ideology more than an existing organization or government.

The unaligned form the first and lowest echelon of the galaxy's industrial value chain; their economies are overwhelmingly anchored around the extraction of the exotic matter endemic to the galaxy, Ancerium, from the extremely hazardous galactic center. Considered to be the only kind of natural resource that has any value left (as every single other type of mineral and element can be found aplenty in deep space), Ancerium fuels the empires' voracious industries and militaries by allowing for energy-efficient superluminal travel and forming the raw natural resource from which metaphasic crystals and other so-called "superprocessed materials" that the empires use are created. Although the extremely energetic spacetime anomalies that fill up the galactic center destroy hundreds of harvester ships daily, the staggering size of the unaligned's industrial fleet means this barely puts a dent in their production. Where it is not absorbed by corrupt politicians and warlords, the wealth from Ancerium extraction has allowed an increasing number of unaligned states to begin moving up the production chain and create massive manufacturing industries.

Each unaligned state is insignificant in the overall picture of the galaxy, dozens of them could cease to exist overnight and barely affect the economy or policy of the larger empires. They have no single unified political, economic or military organization, making them incapable of standing up to the empires and giving them little choice but to endure the economic and humanitarian hardships of the massive wars the empires wage upon each other, wars fought over ideological projects the unaligned have no part in. Yet the fact remains that, due to their sheer number, the galactic unaligned represent over 85% of the galaxy's population, 65% of its GDP and their collective interstellar fleet outnumbers that of every empire combined by multiple orders of magnitude. Many ambitious leaders have tried to wake this sleeping giant and harness its collective power into an unstoppable force by firing up pan-galactic sentiment, none of them succeeding due to the incredibly fragmented geopolitical scene. Yet the sentiment and hope remains that one day the galaxy's rightful owners willunite to purge it of foreign colonizers and take for themselves the wealth they have been extracting for the empires.
