Description Re-process and correction of an old image.

To me, this image speaks to a life that is lost, and for the most part totally forgotten. A life in which there was a connectedness between man and creation. While modern technology has created great strides in growth and development, for which we are all indebted, there is also a loss that has been created. In a way, we have all lost a part of our roots, which help to create a sense of purpose, belonging and stability. In today’s world, there is a belief that we are all independent and separate, yet each of us continues to long for connection and to belong. And while me may believe that we are islands unto ourselves, like this old wagon, we are waiting for a discovery that will prove our value and worth.

THE FORGOTTEN by: kayarlynnean

Souls are wandering
Among this battlefield
Forgotten
What are their stories?
The tales they have told?
Are they forever lost,
Within a past not meant to be?
These souls are wandering
Searching for some way home
But they are trapped
They cannot get out
They are forever lost
Among this battlefield
Forgotten
What will come of their stories?
Of the tales they have told?
What will come of their families?
Of what they’ve left behind?
I’m standing here on this hilltop
I can feel their pain
And I am stuck with them
In a past not meant to be
Now I’m asking
What will come of their stories?
Of the tales they have told?
Of the lives they have lived?
I am being transported
Through time
To a past not meant to be
As I stand here on this hilltop
Alone
In a battlefield
Of loss
Now…
Everything
Is forgotten

there are a few places in Manitoba where the wagon trails are still visible. I like going there, it somehow makes a connection for me to the past. I don't think we have any idea these days of how hard pioneer living was. Certainly few of us, myself for sure, would make it.

I have been to a few countries in our world ... and compared to them, we certainly do live in luxury.

I agree...I'm sure that I would survive as well, something like 50% of men died before reaching their destination...these women dealt with loss of their men, and the infant mortality...their lives were agony compared to what we have...I am very lucky...

Wow. How old is that wagon?

And well said. Today's world doesn't seem to have as much real value as it used to.

I have no idea. But it has metal rims... so I would guess it is before the 20's.

Well said my friend. Today's world is hollow in a way that was unknown a hundred years ago. Not that all things were better then but some were.

I'm not sure what the other one looked like but the composition of this is so good the processing would be secondary.

wayne, this is great.
You have this great thing going in most of your pics : a great sky, a contrasting earth and a "thing" which links it all in the middle, links or contrasts it, it depends, it is your tool of trade and I dig it.
Glad I rediscovered you wayne

WayneBenedet In reply to crayonmaniac [2009-02-20 19:30:53 +0000 UTC]

thanks Christine,

This is a picture I took almost 2 years ago. Back then I was struggling with just setting the parameters of my camera. (there was so much to learn in the digital world). The processing was horrible, in orddr to get the sky to have detail, I created lighter spots around the wheels, but at the time in was the best I could do.

If I was taking the picture today, there would be differences because my camera parameters have changed (they are very flat). I have also learned process in a way that flattens an image and brings out derail in shadows and highlight. As you say, the is a joining of earth and sky. In high contrast images (which is just about every image) it is necessary to pull the bright spots (usually the sky) and the shadows closer together. It is not hard to do, one just needs to be careful in doing it.

This is a print that is for sale, and I felt that the least I could do is offer a better image for reproduction.

Thanks a lot for your comment. (I am feeling more talkative now that the work part is done )

to be honest, I do not notice the difference, in my mind it was beautiful before, and it is still beautiful now. I guess I am just a plebeian when it comes to these kinds of things Christine.

Just keep doing what you do... and don't let EVERY comment cause you to make an adjustment. It will make you crazy. Do only what YOU think is right.

no no wayne, I sift through the ones I wanna adapt, some are really true and then I gain immensely in result, others are just matters of opinion and then I stick to mine.
At my age I know my own mind and abilities too well, but some remarks make me progress, those are the ones I cherish. Other I discard.
So don't worry for me dear friend, I won't be a DA puppet

I know about the sifting thing. I am always going over my work, trying new techniques. The if I find a way to improve an image I do it.

I am sure you will do OK at dA. I on the other hand have lost my brains to it... lol.

back then david, I just did not have the technical abilities to do the job right. I ended up with lighter areas around the wheels in an attempt to get detail in the sky. With better tools and more knowledge, I think I was able to do a better job.

I like how it seems the picture has been taken from a distance. It adds something to the meaning of it. Also, there is a bit of ISO noise in the sky which gives the picture a rustic look
