Description
Both of these objects unlock something. The key is obvious. The lens however unlocks light, and allows the creation of images, through the control of light intensity, perspective and depth of field.with special thanks to DHL Photography for his rendition of this image:

I'm glad you responded, it gives me an opportunity to mention something I meant to say before. I many of your pieces, this one is a perfect example, your use of field depth to focus our eyes is very well done. I noticed this in many of your still life shots. Sometimes you use a shallow dof, sometimes not; always your choice seems purposeful. I think you have a very good eye and understanding of the craft.

thank you very much.
DOF is an amazing thing. Most people think it is "just" controlled by the f stop. But it is also affected by focal length and distance to subject.
What you may find most interesting, is that every shot is taken at f11 and with a 106 mm lens The depth of field variations are a factor not of f stop and focal length but of focus and working distance alone.
The reasons are simple. I have tested the lense, and it provides the best clarity at f11. So that is what I use.
I appreciate your comment on DOF because it is something that I take a great deal of care about. Clarity is a very important thing, and an otherwise excellent shot can be ruined by lack of focus. (When you work with a large format camera, you actually magnify the image in the viewing screen and take measurements to find the right focus point)
Another trick that you might like to know is the 1/3 rule for lenses. (Many professional photographers do not even know it)....Focus 1/3 into your subject, and allow the depth of field to control the remainder of the focus. Why? Because DOF extends away from the camera (and subject, towards infinity, faster than it moves towads the camera.) So if you focus 1/2 way into the scene, your dof will focus the back of the scene and not the front.
Every shot I take uses these simple "rules". A lot of photography is technique, but it is far more than just focus and exposure. These are important not doubt, but lens constrcution and dynamics also play a significant role. What i am trying to do with my work, is to move photogography away from a point and shoot exercise into a thoughtful process that accounts for many complex issues, and allows the artist to choose what will or will not be compromised in the process.
One final comment....photography is compromise. Every setting on the camera compromises another setting. the challenge as I see it, is to get the "best" that you can under the conditions that have been given to you.
This is why many images I are not considered perfect. In my mind they are perfect, because it is the thought, not the technique that counts most.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I did not know the 1/3 rule, but it makes perfect scense optically of course. It is funny that you should mention clarity for that would have been my next comment about your gallery as a whole. I, also, believe in the importance of understanding the technical aspects of one's chosen medium as well as possible. Luckily I have a friend or two here at dA who also tend to be a little 3D nerdy, so I do have opportunity for those learning conversations.

it is a very old 4x5 view camera lens. 4.25 inces in length or about 106 mm. It is a wide angle lens for that format. I did some research on it, and it is valued at about 800.00 us. I bought it for 30.00 because no one knew what it was.

WayneBenedet In reply to Se-perde [2007-02-25 01:21:05 +0000 UTC]
It wil not work on any 35mm equipment. It must be used on a 4x5 view camera. The lens does not have a focusing element, it is the bellows of the camera that provides the focus.
[link] This is a picture that is similar to the camera. it will produce images of 600 or more megs. Most people (myself included) do not have programs that can hadle that size of image.

In deed there is something more. That tension is some of what is intended within this current series. The second one "Span of Time" was just posted.

A very masterful work that provokes a depth of thought that goes way past what is on the visual menu; the key opens, and has the power to close, the lens is/or can be, our perception; the wood represents old traditions of proven nature to me.........very powerful, and I also think this one of your best to date for me.......Sauti...~Anya
