Description
Both of these objects unlock something. The key is obvious. The lens however unlocks light, and allows the creation of images, through the control of light intensity, perspective and depth of field.with special thanks to DHL Photography for his rendition of this image:

thank you very much for your visit and comment. I will be posting another in this series later this week. It will be called "Span of Time" and will feature an old railroad watch from the 1800's.

thank you very much.
These kinds of images are far more difficult to make. I will be posting another that I have been working on over the last number of weeks. It continues the same theme and will be called "Span of Time". I hope you will be able to view that one also.

I will be sure to look for it.
Oh, I just found it and faved it already.. but must go back and comment.
Why do you find them difficult?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
WayneBenedet In reply to ZeNeece [2007-02-24 16:27:59 +0000 UTC]
They are difficult because of the light ranges involved. The table is very dark, and in this image there were reflections on the glass of the lens. Focus is a challenge, because I am working with a 105mm lens, so depth of field is short, but working distance is good (a trade off). The challenge is to keep detail in the shadows as well as the highlights. This requires care in placing the lighting, use of filtration and bounce lighting.
I have learned that with this digital camera, I need to turn down the contrast and saturation for these kinds of shots. Luckily, it has multiple settings, and I just need to choose the set I want so I don't have to make the adjustments over and over.
In the "Span of Time" shot, the challenge was even greater, because while I did not have reflections in glass to deal with, the crystal of the watch degraded the image of the face, and the bright white surface, made the contrast ratios even greater.

If you are "watching", another one was "BORN" today. I will post it on Wednesday or Thursday when I have time. This one will have to do with "time and measurement".

Great shot... love the texture and u composed the shot really well! Well written words too. One thing I would've preferred would be to lower the saturation to give it a more aged feel, but that's just me
btw thanks very much for the fav... it's very much appreciated! Feel free to drop by again anytime!

thanks for your visit and comment.
The saturation is a problem that I do not like eapecially in this image. The original image is taken in RAW, converted to a tiff and then finally to a jpeg. The studio lighting gives enought saturation and contrast that there is nothing that needs to be done. However, I have noticed that the converion to JPEG degrades the original image and increases saturation. This seems tobemore pronounced onthe set up shots under studio lighting) As the effect is not controlled, it is difficult to know how much I would have to reduce it in the tiff before conversion to retain the original effect of the image.
if you have any understanding of what is happeing in the process, please let me know.

I am finding myself being drawn more and more to a style that forces me to begin with the concept rather than with the camera.
I amnot sure I can explain it any better, I just think you will understand.

thank you.
I have taken many pictures like this over the years. My only regret is that I did not use my 4x5 or 6x7. Can you imagine how that would look blown up to 4 by 5 feet? Hmmmm... I guess i could alwasy re-do it.

Wow, yes, I can imagine how genious detailed arts like this would look like. My father keeps on photographing them and I am stunned all the time.
You sohouldn't say that you could always re-do it. That looks like you don't think much of it. But you should, because this one is really, really beautiful!

WayneBenedet In reply to Honigdieb [2007-02-18 20:22:29 +0000 UTC]
yes I agree that this is a very nice shot. It may actually be one of the best that I have done inmy life time, and I have images all over the province from our legislature to government buildings and colleges.
But I still like larger images, and this one is only about 20 megs. I would prefer 5 times that, becuase the quality improvemnt has to be seen to be appreciated. With an image of that size, you get the feeling that you can reach into the picture and take out the object. There is nothing in my mind that compares to that feeling.

Honigdieb In reply to WayneBenedet [2007-02-21 08:11:13 +0000 UTC]
I still don't know this feeling, because my camera is too bad, but I can imagine, what you mean by this. It must be truly fascinating... *sighs*
Oh I considered it the best out of your gallery. But maybe I've just not seen enough of your art yet to judge this...

Don't worry about your camera equipment. In time you will get better equipment yourself. And I have found that no matter what I have, as long as I work at the technique and art side of it, my pictures get better and better, then when I get better equipment....I am ready for it and can really use it to best advantage.
