Description So many of you have asked how I do my art - I usually answer that it is through brute force, ignorance, and an inability to know when I'm beaten.

This is true but I do have some basics I adhere to

I've put together this shockingly bad tutorial to try and put it into words (and a picture)

Hi Windy! I've been away a long time. I stopped in tonight to see if you were still around and what you have been doing. Awesome work as usual! Great little tutorial! Ahhh smudgers! I remember them. It's been a long time since I actually set pencil to paper. I've been so glued to digital art. You are inspiring me to get back at it. Although I don't have a scanner right now.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi!
My membership has lapsed due to lack of funds, but I'll be back someday!
Keep up the amazingly amusing work!

what's a smudger?

awesome tutorial, i'll have to try it out sometime... hm. how about now... *plots* i got all necessary artist graphite pencils...
now i just have to decide what paper is more suitable.

as i said, awesome tutorial, thank you for sharing and... this should be my last visit to your gallery of today. *grins*
but i'll keep stalking you. *goes away mumbling something about square, ivory-hued books..*

Piece of paper rolled up really tight so that you can sharpen it (I buy mine - only 50p and I'm too idle to make my own) - you can use it to blend pecil, charcole etc.

I use cheepo-paper - if I buy expensive paper I get to nervous about wasting a sheet

I'll have to try that. I can shade, as long as I have a reference picture. That already has shading on it. In otherwords, I can't shade.

Very good tutorial.... just what we need on dA, down with the Photoshop-pers!

I always just smudged with my fingers...it works just as well, as long as you don't stop to scratch your face.

I'll try to investigate the whole smudger thing, there are no good art stores around here, so I might make my own.

Thanks again for the very handy tutorial!

Love, Peace, and Empathy...

That's why I use a smudger - it stops me wearing most of my art

leigh-kath In reply to Windy999 [2005-09-05 19:37:30 +0000 UTC]

I don't ever get any on my clothing.... I've only gotten it on my face once. I use really soft pencils too ><.

Thanks again.

I like that you tell people to stop and not fiddle with it all the time. I've wrecked a few things by overworking them. Sometimes a piece screams 'FINISHED!!!' and, even though you might not be totally happy with it, you know that if you fiddle any more it will only get worse, not better...

Technically you're never beaten, it's impossible to 'ruin' a drawing, it just turns out differently to what you expected

Very interesting!

I don't own a smudger...I use my fingers and fingernails through a kleenex. o-o Maybe I should look into smudgers. I also usually use softer pencils...all the way down to 6B and 8B...

This is very nice! I shall faves it! Very excited!
