Description So many of you have asked how I do my art - I usually answer that it is through brute force, ignorance, and an inability to know when I'm beaten.

This is true but I do have some basics I adhere to

I've put together this shockingly bad tutorial to try and put it into words (and a picture)

Wow, I imagine that this would be extremely useful if I drew.

I'm taking now a 2d design class and we're gonna use those pencils, and this was immensely informative. Thank you!

If I could draw I would definitely try this. I get a little when I try to draw, being a perfectionist doesn't help.

--; waits..I got one question..o_O whats a smudger thingy?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Windy999 In reply to Miroku42 [2005-09-04 15:49:45 +0000 UTC]

Some people call it a "stump"

It is a tightly wound roll of paper which can be sharpened and used to, well, smudge pencil and chalk etc

=O so THATS what those are for!

Oh, this is good, this is really good.

… Hmm, looks like I don't have a blender, guess I'll just have to resort to my index finger!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Windy999 In reply to ArofaTamahn [2005-09-04 15:02:22 +0000 UTC]

Try rolling up some scrap paper really tightly - stick some tape around it to hold it together

Hey presto - a blender

(if you've wound it really tightly you can even sharpen it with a pencil sharpener)

Cheers

Very interesting... most times my whole problem is figuring out where the shadow would be in the first place! I should try drawing that mini-reference lightbulb to see if it'll help me too.

Just remember to rub it out at the end

(like I forgot to do )

A tutorial to manual cartooning.....unique and, by the way, I like it! So much digital stuff these days and, although it can be fantastic in its own right, the mighty pen/pencil and smudger are still first with me. Great tut!

use a screwed up piece of paper if you don't have a smudger

(can get a wee bit messy though)

So useful; I'm totally useless at shading with just pencils.

I think I might just buy one of those smudger dealies...

Hehe, nice tutorial.

Overdone is doing too much, so 'overshade' made me think this was about how to shade your drawing too much. Just my random thought.

Windy999 In reply to fatdrake [2005-09-04 11:53:50 +0000 UTC]

I'm often accused of too much shading

I've learned to live with it now
