So, uh, I was watching PatMac's video on Sonic bootlegs, right? At around 11:30 in the video, he's talking about bootleg figures and the random art they put on the packaging...and this art shows up, completely unaltered. The bootleggers made a bootleg...of an art featuring a bootleg...and put it on their bootleg. Yo dawg.

I can't say I'm surprised, as I've seen that picture ( or elements of it ) pop up elsewhere. Though having it on something physical ( allegedly ) is new.

It's just so weird, seeing art of a bootleg on a bootleg. I can't even tell if it's recursive or just meta. It certainly was an accident on the bootlegger's part, that much is certain. Though on the other hand, if your art is good enough to end up some some unofficial packaging, when it's good enough for someone to take notice like that, even if it's obviously morally wrong, you must be doing SOMETHING right.
I must be honest, I do enjoy the fact that people took these bootleg renders and made actual characters out of them, like this art does. It's an allusion to the sparks of creativity this fanbase IS capable of beyond all the X the Hedgehog recolours people keep bringing up. Plus the art itself is just funny, and I do feel Sonic's expression perfectly resembles the expression of anyone seeing this weird picklehog for the first time. I like this, you did good.

Lol at companies that try to bootleg Sonic's image! Β But I've seen worse; One company sold quite a few packs of bootleg "Sonic brand" candy cigarettes before they were caught & stopped!

But yes, sometimes things can get pretty entertaining (and freaky). It's almost always Classic Sonic that seems to get copied, though, I've noticed.

Probably because he's the easiest to alter, and that it was easier to get away with bootleg products back in the 90's.(Bootleg is anything made or copied that doesnt respect the origional trademark or copywrite, is done without permission, and is almost always suspicious or of inferior quality. Β Bootleg also means anything that's counterfeit or a knock-off, and often they'll have a copywrite symbol that isn't accurate to the origional product's copywrite, hand-cut tags & labels, and imagery that makes no sense. Β Buyer beware if you're a collector; there's a lot of bootleg Sonic stuff out there!)
