transcript:

"Phew…" Pushing the wheeled cart carrying our unexpected cargo through the front door, I sighed and wiped away the small beads of sweat that had gathered on my brow, thankful that our house was close enough to school that the journey hadn't really worn me out. "So, uh… what do we do with him?"

"This way!!" Celeste had gone further into the house but now emerged from the living room, somehow already changed into her maid dress (I would question whether she was superhuman, but, well, she kind of was). "As long as it's not a lot further…" I pushed Philip along even as I complained, the wheels of the cart creaking pretty loudly though he remained fast asleep. "Wait… did you have to do this to me last night as well?" "...Indeed. Which is why I asked you to help, Mistress!" Celeste pointed towards a doorway near the entrance to the kitchen, which looked very suspicious. "Could you help carry him down there?"

"...I can't help but feel like there's a much easier way to do this." Thud. Thud. Thud. As I slowly and arduously dragged Philip down the steps into the basement, his shoes thumping against every step, Celeste followed closely behind me, not lifting a finger to help. It was almost out of character for how dutiful and helpful she had been all day, but I would be lying if I said I couldn't get what she felt - it really was hard lugging a whole male body down these stairs, with these arms. I think I had probably been a little heavier than Philip too…

"Do we need to… wake him up?" I had dragged Philip into the center of the basement, and he snored away obliviously as the two of us stood over him. "It's okay, Mistress!" Celeste crouched down and gently laid a hand on Philip's forehead, closing her eyes in concentration. "Having him asleep makes it easier for us to work…" "Work?" I got down on one knee beside her, instantly regretting my decision as my leg banged against the hard concrete floor. "O-ow…" "Be careful, Mistress!" Immediately reaching out her other hand to stabilize me, Celeste gave me a worried glance. "You can just sit down…"

As I shifted my position and sat down cross-legged besides Celeste, she gave her explanation. "I should start teaching you about the fundamentals of our magic, Mistress… you'll probably have to use them in the future as well!" "M-magic?" "Magic! The same magic that turned you into a kitsune, and the same magic that made everyone think you were just a normal girl… well, aside from him of course." Celeste took a deep breath, furrowing her brows a little as she concentrated. "What I'm trying to figure out at this moment is his energy… it is very much like a human's, such that I couldn't tell in my first scan… but there's something off about it."

"Can I do that, too?" I couldn't help but feel a pang of excitement as I watched Celeste - as a kid I'd always imagined having magical powers to make things fly around or disappear into thin air, and even now the thought of doing things like that gave me that feeling of childish wonderment once again. "Of course! Just close your eyes, and try to feel him. His presence, his warmth, his existence…" I followed Celeste's instructions, and almost immediately felt something that was Philip almost like an aura, throbbing and humming ever so faintly.

"Ah - I can feel it!" "Very good, Mistress…" I could feel a similar sort of aura surrounding Celeste beside me as well - warm and comforting and strong, but almost with a hidden sense of fragility to it, somehow… "You'll learn to tell the difference between human and nonhuman energies in time, but this is a good start!" But I barely heard her, focusing on Philip's energy again as I felt the offness that Celeste was talking about. It was just like a little kink, a flaw in the completeness of his energy… like a lock holding a chest shut. "Maybe I should…" "H-huh? Mistress?"
