Description Some time ago I told some one that I would make this movie and though it has been nearly a month or more I have finally been able to do so.

For those who have seen the masking series much of it may be rehashed or old news.

Barry

Note: I have never really liked this movie as it was first uploaded and today, Feb 9th 2006, I have reposted a better version of it.

Thank you so much. I've been searching around for a way to mask an layer with the alpha channel for an hour or so now. I'm compositing TGA files from maya into one solid image and needed to know how to do this. It worked great. Thanks again!

ooh sorry u did reply 2 this comment, sorry i didnt see..
erm well i just go to save as, and the only option i have is save it as a png. When i reopen it in photoshop its just grey scale..but if i go to the channel section and select the eye thing near the alpha channel it comes back. when i saved it everything was selected and it had teh colour part, but when i open it in any other program i lose the colour...i dont know whats with it.
ive tried saving it as jpg etc..but that dosent help :S

Although I don't even have Photoshop it kept me watching because it was so imformative and just like I was sitting listening to someone talking to me directly in the same room. Your voice sounds friendly and not too formal and boring.
I've always wondered how this was done You never know, I might get Photoshop in the future.
I think it deserves a fav because obviously a lot of effort has been put into it and I have never seen a tutorial done in this way before.

excellent second tip on the over color-ness

personally i wouldn't duplicate the original
in order to desaturate but do that in order
to make a better b&w

i figure the desaturate actually works great
for this style since it takes some of the contrast
away from the B&W which gives an extra "pop"
to the color.

cheers
jaako

p.s. cheers for reviving your sound card also

Barry:

I just came across your tutorial through the search page and I just wanted to say THANK YOU!!! I'm just beginning to learn Photoshop and have been wanting to find a tutorial that discuss this very topic to work on some photos that I have. It was easy to follow and you provided great shortcut tips (some which I didn't even know) to get through the process. Appreciate your posting this and since it appears you do other tutorials, I'll be sure to keep a watch out for future ones.

Thanks again!

Nice simple tutorial. missed you videos! Are you going to be doing anymore of the complex masking videos? Oh yeah, and what is the best way to turn a colour image into grey scale?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BarryKiddPhotography In reply to Brynman [2005-07-09 17:08:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. As far as the longer more complex movies I'll make more when the time comes. I just need to find a new theme to work on

As far as a good way to convert to B&W from color perhaps that will be something I could work up and post soon.
