I made a big mistake with this startrail. For the second time in a row I forgot to dial in my custom white balance. The camera tries its best but the auto white balance setting leads to unnatural star colours. Until I get around to manually changing the white balance on all the RAW files this will have to do for now.
Some of you may be wondering why I didn't have my astrophotography setup out on a good night like this. The truth is I have had a back/hip problem for the last two weeks and I physically can not lift the heavy mount. Hopefully recover soon.

I like seeing how the trails curve in the opposite direction on opposite sides of the celestial equator.

Took me a minute to figure out the strange pattern in this startrail
I'm not quite the astronomer you are, Greg and my sense of direction isn't the best and I'd be totally lost in Australia as I'd be looking for the Big Dipper and the North Star to get my bearings!
Anyway, nice grabs on this, Greg

Thanks John It is a bit different to most trails that you would see. Well if you ever make it down under I would gladly be your night sky tour guide mate

Wow it's interesting how the curves of the trails change.. Is that because of the type of lense you use? I am really curious!

Thank you The curves are due to the rotation of the earth. This is shot looking directly east. As the Earth rotates towards the east any stars in the east will perform straight lines in the sky. As you move closer to the poles the stars start to bend around the poles. Best way I can describe what you are seeing here is.... Stand up. Imagine that your body is the axis of the earth and your head is the north pole and your feet the south pole. Now look at a spot on the ground close to your feet and turn around once. What happens to that spot? It performs a little circle around your feet. Now look at a spot about 10 feet away and turn again. What happens? It makes a bigger circle around you. Now look at a spot far away on the horizon and turn again. What happens to the spot? It makes a straight line around your head. Hope this explains it.

Dont get down on yourself, this is a really great shot dude, I really like it (mutters under his breath about wanting to try this for ages). Awesome trails, and I think your colours look alright, out of interest what is your white balance in Kelvin?
Nice shot dude Hope thine issues solve themselves soon. Take it easy!

Nope. You can't have it mate. I'm all better now. Had some therapy done on it yesterday. I'm mended!
Thanks for the kind feedback on this. 3800 Kelvin but I must stress that this is for my dark skies. What your optimum WB temperature is will depend on your sky conditions.

Damn *plots*
My skies are pretty good, but not as good as yours. Next decent night I'm going to work on this idea, I've just auto balanced in the past, and it generally seems to be favourable. But I'd like to have it bang on.
Glad to hear you're feeling better, don't slip on any banana skins

Have not got one yet. Still thinking about what would best suit my needs. Might have to replace my desktop computer soonish too so money might become an issue with the lappy. May need to put it on hold for a while.

Thank you so much Clive Means a great deal coming from you. I have not got around to changing all the RAWs yet. Leaving that for a very rainy day. This is basically as shot, with the off colour stars. Really lazy with this one. Taken from my back deck from my house near Wagga Wagga looking east out towards the Snowy Mountains

Bobby01 In reply to CapturingTheNight [2012-02-16 02:21:48 +0000 UTC]
Haha yeah well you can be excused for being a little lazy! Especially with 245 files to change!
You're pretty lucky to get this view from your back deck! In Sydney we can hardly even see the stars with all the light pollution! Hoping to get out and about again soon and experiment with some more startrails...
My last one was shot in jpeg so will be interesting to see the difference when shot in RAW, do you have to convert all the files to tiff first or can startrails handle RAW files?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CapturingTheNight In reply to Bobby01 [2012-02-16 06:55:33 +0000 UTC]
Startrails can not handle RAW files. So yeah if you want better quality or to change a setting then you would need to convert them all to Tiffs. I'll let you in on a little secret. All the star trails in my gallery were processed from just the jpegs. I still have all the RAWs (I shoot in RAW + jpeg) so if I ever get around to launching a website and offering prints I will reprocess the best ones from the RAWs for the best possible print quality. I think I will need a rainy month for that Can't wait to see your next experimentations.

Bobby01 In reply to CapturingTheNight [2012-02-20 06:26:13 +0000 UTC]
haha yeah that will certainly take a while!! I was quite happy shooting in jpeg for the startrails as I had to degrade the quality of the images anyway as startrails kept crashing! Not sure if its an issue with the program or with my computer, but I'm running a fairly decent setup so didnt think it would be an issue...
Whats the highest resolution you use in startrails? I'm shooting at 18MP...
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CapturingTheNight In reply to Bobby01 [2012-02-20 06:46:16 +0000 UTC]
18MP is what my camera shoots at too. Never had an issue with it crashing on my jpegs. Maybe try downloading the latest version and see how it goes??? or.....there is another program very similar to startrails. StarStax [link] produces exactly the same results but has a few features that startrails does not have and vice versa.

Wow, that's a different star trail than I normally see. I actually like the different colours of the stars. Hope your back/hip doesn't restrict you for too long. That was one of the reasons I didn't go any further with trying some astrophotography. I'm the sort of person that if I decide to do something I try and do it as properly as I can. When I saw the weight of these things, I didn't think my neck/shoulder would appreciate it. The weight of my camera and lens alone aggravates it. Mind you my camera/lens isn't very light weight either.

Thank you very much for the great feedback and well wishes Margaret I'm feeling much better now after having some therapy done on it today. I hope you neck/shoulder doesn't restrict you to much from getting out and taking those awesome shots of yours. My ultimate goal is to have a permanent home like an observatory for my astrophotography equipment so I don't have to lug it in and out from the house whenever I want to use it.

nutmeg-42 In reply to CapturingTheNight [2012-02-16 09:13:32 +0000 UTC]
Having your own observatory would certainly be cool. My injuries don't restrict me in the fact that when I have the camera in my hands and up to my face everything else goes away. It's after that it rears it's ugly head, but I'll be stuffed if I'm going to let that get in the way of my photography. Besides I'm not adverse to popping a pill.....or two.
