Description I'm having a hard time believing this is done. A personal full colour piece (the first in a long while) which served as a practise on many things and turned out decent at that, with the help of many wonderful people both from DA and ConceptArt.

I've had these questions a lot in it's progress while I was streaming, so I'll answer them to avoid having to answer them again in comments; every scale on the dragon as well as every strand of grass was hand drawn. I did not use any custom brushes, the standard hard-edge brush was used for the entire piece, with a few strokes of a soft edge brush here and there. Textures were used only for the rocks, and one for the base of the grass which I painted over so much that it was practically of no use xD.

I'd like to thank everyone that watched me work on this on LiveStream for their support and interest, and just for the fun :3. As well as those who read the entire description ;D.

Its so very, very impressive!

You finished eet!

Looks absolutely stunning! I love the final colour you chose for the dragon and the background of course.

What I wanted to ask: How do you draw the scales? All seperate?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CaraidArt In reply to Mith-cest-Moi [2010-03-09 11:54:06 +0000 UTC]

The scales were all hand drawn, I painted in a dark base colour then drew the scales on top with a lighter, more saturated colour . More came to it eventually but that was mostly a matter of taste (painting over the whole with a low opacity brush to blend it together and so on).

Thank you!

CaraidArt In reply to azurespiritwolf [2010-03-09 11:57:50 +0000 UTC]

Haha yes, the grass too. And believe it or not, the grass was actually easier to do than the scales ^^. There's not so much a systematic pattern in grass as there is in scales .

this must have taken you ages! doing all the grass strands one by one and the scales! but its worth it! it looks so amazing! and the background sucks you in makes me want to grow wings and fly around preferably far away from the dragon though I wouldn't want to get eaten This painting is truly breath taking

Absolutely gorgeous. The background... Well it's hard to believe it's actually drawn! It looks so real and life-like! I love the amount of detail you've put into the background, but of course, the scales on the dragon and the grass in the foreground are the real attention grabbers here. I also love the whole mood of this picture - very calm, peaceful and happy C': wish I could be there, sitting next to the dragon.
I applaud you, Lhune, I really think this is your best work yet. Just knocked me off my feet!

*wipes drool away*

Okay, there's so much I love about this, I am going to bullet point to make for easier reading.

1) The texturrrreee. Oh. my. gosh. the texture. Like, seriously, you did this all with one brush?! And you got that variety of different textures?! Holy baloney, girl, you're crazy. The grass, the scales, the clouds, the rocks - everything has its own different brushstrokes, its own unique surface. Your use of texture is just mindblowing.
2) The colours you've chosen are amazing and the way you've composed them is perfect. I love the light foreground against the darker, less saturated background (especially that bright patch of grass on the right, that's just stunning) and how all the colours harmonize. I think a little orange/red shadow on the dragon would have been nice to contrast against the blue/green, but I definitely prefer that blue to the browney colour you had in your last WIP :>
3) The attention to detail is just....wow. Seriously. There's honestly not a lot I can say because words wouldn't be enough to describe how fantastic and amazing all that detail is.
4) I think my favourite thing is the calm, serene atmosphere of this - it really feels like we're there, in the image, gazing over our domain and enjoying a beautiful day. You can really hear the gentle sigh of the wind, the slow breathing of the dragon, the rustle of the grass. You can feel the soil beneath the dragon's claws, the sun beating down on him, his slow, powerful heartbeat.

You have really, really outdone yourself with this one, hun. Your patience and perfectionism has paid off massively - this is a masterpiece and you should be so, so proud of yourself <3

Long comment is looooong <333.

1) Yush, one brush :3. I will not deny that I am crazy. xD I need to really grow a little more confident with using custom brushes, I feel like they might really loosen up my paintings a lot (that and I've seen some awesome brushwork in other art).

2) Thankyew :3. I did have more of a reddish shading on the dragon at first, but decided against it. I'm not sure why, but I'm experimenting with different colours and shading in another picture now, I suppose I'll grow out my comfort zone at some point xD.

3 & 4) I'm really glad that the overall mood of the picture has come out well. This is exactly what I was going for, a feeling of calmth, of a pleasant sunny day, perhaps a bit dreamy :3.

Thanks a lot hun <3. I'm glad you think it's a step forward for me, that was it's purpose after all :3.

Lhune this is just so great. The thing is that i know i can't compliment you as much as you deserve. Indeed when everything is that much worked in a picture, we feel as we couldn't do anything but enumerate every part for its awesomeness. However, yet since i've just noticed something i'm very much sensible to, i'll try to explain it instead of accumulating awesome adjectives
I'm currently studying in an architecture school, and what i usually look for in a finished project that is interesting, is the proportion relationship between elements. A simple contrast don't usually manage to achieve it, the distances between elements are very important as well. I think that here you've succeeded in creating some of these subtle relationships. Haha, maybe it'll appear to you as very noting, but i just love how the grass' strands proportions are interacting with the dragon's own proportions, and the suggested distances through the dragon's shadow just works.
As well, the relationship between the ground and cloud behind the dragon's back, in the background, is very special too i think. Again, the grass' strands proportion, allied to the very close distance to this big cloud, and the color contrast between the bright green and the dark gray make it very unique.
Now, the only thing's left to do for me is to FAV AND RUN
Again, great job Lhune!~
