Description
It may not be the most artistically breathtaking thing to show in your inbox, but don't under-estimate it - these planets were made using NO image-based textures at all! virtually made from nothing but clever use of filters and functions alone! That's right, 100% pure Vue work right here
Some of the advantages of fully procedural materials include:
- Uses WAY less memory, each planet-object and their materials don't even use one MB of space (lol, bit of a pun in there)
- Dosn't get that "distortion" at the polar areas of the sphere that image-based textures do, so these planets can be rotated and viewed from any angle without weird "polar suction"
- Higher detail, since image-mapped textures lose quality fast as you approach closer, these do too an extent and become a bit blurry, but not in an unnatural "pixellated" way
- Easier to edit, rather than making a new map for a new planet all over again, the proportion of land to sea can be easily be changed, as can the colours of the planets, the level of cloud-cover and how swirly they are and so on.
This is a preview showing 2 of 4 planets I have made for a high-grade resource pack for Vue users that I'll intend on selling on Cornucopia (gotta get a store account first
A far bigger (and dearer) pack is in the making, it will contain these four planets plus a shitload more! things like Ringed Gas Giants, Suns and even nebulae that I have made directly in Vue - for Vue
Might move to scraps later, depends on how many faves it gets (I don't think it would get much

You still get the attention so what's up with the manic thoughts about the favs?
Isn't it better to get good comments instead and focus on that instead of taking the favourites to heavily?
The favs itself doesn't really show "that much". It's the comments that holds the real focused support, atleast that's what I think anyways.
Your choice in the end if you still gonna make such a big issue about how many favs your work gets. When you averege like a couple hundred per deviation latley I dont' think you should feel all that concerned really.
I't say, focus on the comments instaed, it'll do you better

Well more faves still means more comments too, and more comments means more of the good one slike yours that will come in a popular deviation will get a higher ratio of faves to comments for sure, but even those comments alone would still be greater in amount than a deviation that hardly anyone notices
Still, I get what you mean, I'm usually more excited about comment messages than fave ones, but lots of faves never hurt either

Pretty cool. Both planets looks awesome, but I prefer the little one. A couple of the clouds on the larger plane looks as if they're made from that bumpy white ceiling stuff.

Yeah, the clouds are better off viewed from further away, perhaps no closer than this. I'm sure the other one would look the same up this close too But given the fact they use no image-based texturing, I still think the Vue user's over at Cornucopia3D would want them since they have a high level of detail but use practically nothing in terms of memory

Beautiful! Again... Is there somewhere a button that will send all your devations right to my favourites?
I can still keep faving
But it's worth it.
You keep better and better.

Lol, I'm actually glad there's no such button...it will further widen the popular vs unpopular gap I'm afraid you'll have to do it the manual way

Thanks a lot, general textures for rocky and moon-like planets are fun to create too, and easier as well, the bigger, extended pack will have 3 rocky planets and around 7 alternative materials to use on them but these ones here are definetily the main event of the pack
Thanks for faving too

Yeah, it's fun to use, almost makes you feel like God well these were relaly hard to make, but still possible...Guess if you learn how to do it, you can make your own rather than having to buy them from Cornucopia3D once I release them

Dude, are you serious? You made these....all completely from scratch using nothing but filters and such? O_o; Well then, mad props to you...because you just completely made my night. One could almost think for a second that these were real photographic images of these planets grouped together, but when you learn they were created by another human being, you can't help but appreciate the extraordinary ability one should possess in being able to do so.
I love the portrayed depth of the Earth's atmosphere, and particularly the almost natural lighting effects foreshadowing the surfaces. Beautiful work here once again my friend.

Thanks a lot, and yep - Photo relaism was my goal, but getting that effect without any image maps or Photoshop illustration is pretty tough, as I said before - it's basically creating something out of nothing, but the reward is that it also uses nothing in terms of memory, each 3D planet actually uses LESS memory than the rendered image of them here that will be a highly desireable feature when I go to sell them to other Vue users
Glad you liked it

Very impressive work! It's cool that you're doing these experiments on Vue, it shows that you are not dependent on Photoshop for adding final touches and can create great digital artwork without Photoshop. I especially like the detailed clouds on this one!

Thanks, yeah creating special effects, especially for space scenery is near impossible without Photoshop, so I'm breaking that rule and trying to give hope to 3D artists that don't have - or know how to use Photoshop

Thanks, I was going to put a Moon-like planet in there, but figured I'd also show off what these planets look like as a whole from far off, as well as having one close plus a "Moon" would make too many assume it's supposed to be Earth lol

That looks great! Impressive work considering you didn't use any textures or nothing! (Only in program ones)
Though I think the planet near us, is a bit "flat" looking, somehow it lacks a bit of depth between the clouds and sea, but I don't know how to fix that, it just looks a bit off to me. But still, really good!

Chromattix In reply to DanielHovdahl [2009-03-14 00:59:23 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, The lighting on the near planet is a bit uniform I'll admit, but that's just how it works in 3D with only one light source, it kinda simulates real life...Since we are only viewing the top-left corner of it, so if you can imagine zooming in to the distant one, the cropping out the top-left of that too, you would see that you'll only get the well-lit part that lacks shadow too

Your welcome. Yeah, I see what you mean! I got no clue whatsoever with how 3D rendering goes, but still. This DOES look really good, I just thought it looked a bit weird, might be just me... (As I'm weird, so go figure!)

I love painting texture maps, but there's a lot to be said for using procedurals when you can get away with it - and these cloud layers are a perfect application for them, very nice! Good luck with selling your stuff!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Chromattix In reply to ceruleanvii [2009-03-14 00:37:20 +0000 UTC]
Painting texture maps is usually more fun to do but your'e right! If you can get away with using non-image based materials, the it's often better in terms of memory usage and render time, and that's why i think they might sell well on that Vue resource site - anyone can make good planets by making texture-mapped spheres but good-res maps can hog a lot of memory. At leats these are just as detailed and yet hardly use any space at all (I think they average around the 300kb mark each
)
