You wouldn't happen to know how to do that fringe on the brush on paintshop pro x2, would you?

I'm sorry, I wouldn't! D:
I'm not familiar with that program.

It's okay... Most people aren't... I have got photoshop on my computer, but it doesn't act right... I got Paintshop Pro or free sooooooo.... Yeah.

The fringe effect seems really neat, but I can't seem to find it anywhere in my SAI. I have this problem a lot when I see others make tutorials on SAI and realize "But I don't have that..." so I'm wondering if I'm just using a different version than others. What version of SAI are you using?

chuwenjie In reply to Otakatt [2012-03-25 22:05:14 +0000 UTC]
Hm... I checked the version info on my SAI, but it wasn't very helpful. Check again if it's there? Fringe should be in the Effects drop down menu on the left hand side. If it's not, I'd check the SAI website to see if you have the newest version.

Omg, I can't even tell you how much this helped me out. I don't have a tablet yet, so I can't paint like most people can who have tablets, but this method just works without one. This is a drawing I did using this technique [link] I'm very happy with it ^-^

Damn I've always hated linearts, but I love the effect they create. I'll definitely have to try the fringe effect like this! Thanks

That's cool! It's never occured to me to use the fringe setting this way.
Quick question -- in step 4 when you merge the layers down, how do you avoid losing the full impact of some of the overlay layers? I sometimes find that when I use Overlay and especially Luminosity layers, I tend to lose their vibrancy when I merge down.
Thanks again for sharing, it's a cool tutorial.

chuwenjie In reply to SheldonGoh [2012-03-25 02:38:26 +0000 UTC]
I actually do merging in Photoshop, because merging in SAI can take a really long time, especially when you have over 30 layers. If you don't have Photoshop, you could always try saving the file as a high quality JPG, and then applying the effects on top of it.

Ah, OK. Are you merging in PS specifically for the performance limitations in SAI? Or does merging in PS also offer some artistic choices not found in SAI?
Thanks for answering, BTW. You've been super helpful.

Merging in Photoshop is just easier in my opinion. Otherwise, I don't think there are any other benefits.
No problem, I'm glad to help.

Amazing tutorial! I'm looking forward to trying it out. I've always struggled to make my line art look nice, clean, and crisp...always comes out "lumpy" as my friends like to say. Thank you for posting this tutorial!

I worked on it on and off for three days. I'd say about 5 or 6 hours?

It,s funny but I was once an artist working with, oil, pastel,s.pencil, chalk, even some water colors.Even did a lot of airbrush art for bikes and cars ,tattooing as well. Then came the computer and I must learn everything in a new way, differently. Thanks I am making progress.

Ah, that's true. However, I believe that despite the rise of digital art, traditional still has a certain organic quality to it that makes it timeless.
Glad this tutorial helps~
