Carl was warned about the kitsune, or fox spirits, who lived in the forest. They loved to play pranks on unsuspecting travelers and had no ethical standards of right and wrong like humans did. Carl took no heed of such warnings and wandered off into the forest. He did not stay on the main path that was deemed safe and even went as far as to avoid previously travelled paths altogether. If that was not bad enough, he became lost and shouted for help at the top of his lungs.

As one might suspect, a kitsune eventually discovered him. Yes, she could have helped the lost traveler but that was not her style. She danced around Carl making him wonder whether or not he was just seeing things. Then she made a quick and calculated move. She quietly tip toed behind him and bit him on the neck.

Carl collapsed to the ground floating in and out of consciousness. This was something he had not been warned about. Perhaps they did not even know kitsune had such powers, but Carla did. Carla woke the next morning as a kitsune ready to pull pranks on unsuspecting travelers.
