Actually it's simply heavily simplified. The numbers presented only refer to the portion of their DNA that determines what kind of pony they are. For example the 42% unicorn means that 42 percent of the pony determining DNA consists of the series of letters that are short for the chemical sequences that make the nucleotides. The specific sequences in this world determine specific pony traits, such as a horn, proficiency with magic, wings the ability to walk on clouds and so on.
But I get the feeling I'm babbling like a brook. Long story short its a further simplification to aid base understanding.

The math was added because last time people erroneously said that my numbers don't add up. They tried to point out that you get 50% of your DNA from each of your parents. Though that was already in the course. So this is to show that all the numbers add up to what they're supposed to.

I picked the numbers for Dinky, based on what I' seen Majority Unicorn for being a Unicorn and since she was bouncy in winter wrap up gave her more pegasus than Eath pony then I split the numbers basically in half and drew out from each parent what I could. Since I only gave Derpy 20% Unicorn I couldn't give Dinky more than that from Derpy.

That's what I meant by the numbers being arbitrary. Theres no way I could have the exact numbers. They're just there as an example to show how its possible for two ponies of different groups to have offspring from the third group.

i thought that could only occur if one had a recessive trait, let's say Ditzy had unicorn, and that was passed on to the kid from being dominant over another trait, let's say earth pony, or from being matched with it's own kind of gene...?
