Description
I'm glad the episode brought this up, that people can't tell the difference is... Well, I guess I should see it coming but I rarely do.And then someone on a MLP site's comments said that terrapins are ALL freshwater turtles, including (their own example) SNAPPING TURTLES.
EDIT: Did some more research and apparently some tortoises HAVE been observed floating so that they can doggy paddle a little. The general agreement, however, is that most tortoises will sink like a rock. Those crazy testudines!
2022 EDIT: The comic got a dub by Agent0Fluffy !

Awesome, very tricky terminology. Most other cultures have one word to cover turtles, tortoises, and terrapins. In America and Australia it is now accepted to refer to tortoises as turtles.

Indeed. In Poland we call them earth turtles and sea turtles. There is a separate word for terrapins (pol. terapena), but I know that just because I googled it a minute ago, otherwise, I would just call it turtle.

Maybe she'll just call him a rock in the translation.

[Warning: rant ahead] Well, believe it or not, but 'cockatrice' wasn't translated in Polish dub, it was called "cockatrice monster" (pol. potwรณr cockatrice), if I remeber. I know that there is a difference between basilisk and cockatrice, but calling it basilisk (pol. bazyliszek, both the mythical and real world creature) wouldn't harm, would it? I guess they are consistent when it comes to keeping English names, like "Twilight Sparkle", not translated but... come on, everyone has read Harry Potter, right? And even if not, there is a Polish legend about basilisk, at least I remember it, so this creature is not that unknown...
God, this comment was long, but I guess I really care for dub quality and translation.

That IS odd! I'd have thought they'd just stick with cockatrice (if people thought it was made up for the show then nothing lost) or indeed basilisk as the 2 are pretty much interchangeable terms...!
I'm sure a lot of English-speaking people didn't know the word "cockatrice" anyway.
...And yet it was apparently worries that kids wouldn't know what a "duke" is that lead them to calling Rarity's crush (fan name = Prince Blueblood) Celestia's "nephew" which raises all sorts of questions!

Yeah...
Here's what Wiki says "American English tends to use the word turtle as a general term for all species. "Tortoise" is used for most land-dwelling turtle species, including the family Testudinidae and box tortoises. Oceanic species are usually referred to as sea turtles."

It was called "Calling All the Sea ponies". It has lyrics like Shooby doop. Shoo Shoo be DOOP! It's fun to sing it.

Actually Smudovier, when the US built a museum dedicated to the Natives, It was changed from "Indian" to "Native American" at the request of some white woman who brought it up.
It was then changed back to "Indian" at the request of an actual Native American. So by the admission of subjects, both terms are acceptable.

I was pretty impressed by this, although i still feel this doesn't make up for the fact that they refer to Bison in the series as Buffalo. It's like refering to Native Americans as Indians...

Maybe they'll come back to it later? Was meant to be early times in Pony-Bison relations.
