Description
I'm glad the episode brought this up, that people can't tell the difference is... Well, I guess I should see it coming but I rarely do.And then someone on a MLP site's comments said that terrapins are ALL freshwater turtles, including (their own example) SNAPPING TURTLES.
EDIT: Did some more research and apparently some tortoises HAVE been observed floating so that they can doggy paddle a little. The general agreement, however, is that most tortoises will sink like a rock. Those crazy testudines!
2022 EDIT: The comic got a dub by Agent0Fluffy !

Cows die if they don't eat enough insects when grazing, we still tend to call them herbivores rather than insectivores... Also, that tortoises CAN eat meat doesn't mean they should:

(This says no meat ever for 2 sorts of tortoises)
...Of course I'm sure there are some tortoises where it's fine, but even then it's probably only in small amounts. As a general rule of thumb they're herbivores and I'm not aware of any tortoises that NEED meat in their diet.

Box turtles are turtles. They're black sheep of the Testudines but they're closer related to some definite-turtles than most tortoises.

Also it took a long time to name some giant tortoises because they're notoriously DELICIOUS and people kept eating their whole stock before making it back...!
On the bright side they have impressive life spans.

then why do people call box turtles if they are land reptiles?

HareTrinity In reply to fluttershy13 [2011-12-03 04:59:46 +0000 UTC]
I understand "Box tortoise" is an alternative name but box turtle is the more accurate as they're most closely related to a few species of definite-turtles...
Black sheep of the Testudine family I guess?

My sister owns two Russian tortoises (they're sleeping next to me) and two red-eared sliders, but we still call them all turtles.
But we do know not to sink the tortoises

LOTS of turtles float. In fact, I live in Texas and I've never seen a turtle that wasn't within fifty feet of water. Then again, that might just be because it's Texas.
Still, it's common practice to "go out to the tank" (read: pond) and shoot turtles that poke their heads up through the water. A few hours later to a day later, the body will appear on the shoreline.

Turtles can swim and come up to sunbathe... I said tortoises don't swim.
If they live in water they're turtles.
