I'm glad the episode brought this up, that people can't tell the difference is... Well, I guess I should see it coming but I rarely do.And then someone on a MLP site's comments said that terrapins are ALL freshwater turtles, including (their own example) SNAPPING TURTLES.
Trust me, those crocodile wannabes are NOT included in the term!EDIT: Did some more research and apparently some tortoises HAVE been observed floating so that they can doggy paddle a little. The general agreement, however, is that most tortoises will sink like a rock. Those crazy testudines!

Referring to Native Americans as "Indians" came from the misconception (accidental or intentional) that Columbus had discovered a Western route to Asia and thus "The Indies." Whoops, normally tortoise can take on shallow water, but they can't take on anything deeper. But normally I thought they could swim because their shell has enough surface area to float, just couldn't swim well with their legs that is. That's my science theory that is as I seen one but never seen it for many times and long times.

I mention in the desc that some people say they can float/paddle but I'm not sure how true that is for ALL tortoises... Might just be certain breeds.

I only saw them in pet shops as that's where I get the idea from. As far as water depth goes, usually they're not deep as the height is about 1/3 of our finger length.
