Hello:

Β This is a great chart! It would be amazing if you can post them in other angles too .

Β The Orville has a very distinctive look of their ships, with some hints to the System Commonwealth's High Guard ships from the series "Andromeda". You made a very good work making this . Keep it up!

I loved watching that show.Β  I never missed an episode of it.Β  Seth McFarlane captured the spirit of the original Star Trek with this show, and threw in a little of his brand of humor as well.Β  There's been a lot of talk about a Season 2, but somehow it never happened.Β  I wonder if they changed their minds about it?

I really like these designs. They are quite refreshing compared to the Saucer/Engineering/Nacelles seen 1000 times on Star Trek or if you look at Sci Fi art in general it's flying rifles everywhere.

But these designs are nice to look at, without being too agressive or look too much like a luxury liner, they are perfectly in the middle.

The only thing i would criticise about them is that the courves are hard to draw. Β

jbobroony In reply to Nhlaqgor [2018-08-26 13:03:35 +0000 UTC]

That's totally my view too, love the style of these ship. all of them look fast and sleek, with a edge you don't normally see in telly.Β
also your right, nearly all ship in sci-fi look like guns in some way... never thought of it too now.
I think e owe that to the USS Sulaco from aliens.... or may be Earth force from Babylon. lol

as for the curves... did not enjoy the experience at all, they just don't look curvy enough in pixel from.

Thank you for the chat mate, it nice to read a informed comment. cheers sir and i hope you had a great birthday?

Nhlaqgor In reply to jbobroony [2018-08-26 14:18:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you sir, i had a quite pleasant birthday!

You did a great job transferring the ship models to a 2D view. It lies in the natur of those designs that the courves don't really shine from thise perspective, but the ship designs look nice nevertheless.

I have a bit of experience with designing spaceships myself and what i have noticed when studying other ppl.s designs is that sometimes (Surprisingly often found in "professional" designs) that they look only good from one angle alone and sometimes absolutely terrible from other angles. *cough*Star Trek: Online*cough*

These ships on the other hand... i haven't see one angle where the Orville looks really bad. Its a sleek, beautiful and in general a very well balanced design. A worthy reinvention of the Star Trek -like design philosphy of beautiful hero/spaceships.(sry, my bad english today, lol)Β

I just hope they don't start adding too many different ship classes, in avoid that chaotic mess Star Trek has. Or they could have gone the other route and make each ship individually, but i think that would have been too much of a work for Movie/series production.

Yeah the Sulaco started the rifle/gun spaceship era and it seems it is (still) quite popular among lots of Sci fi fans.

Personally i find it a bit boring and uncreative, especially when you can clearly see where the handle or the magazine clip is supposed to be, i mean come on, can't they come up with something better?

But on the other hand there are LOTS of so called Star Trek fans who only care how much Photon torpedoes and phasers a starship has, nothing else.

I always tend to think to myself :yeah these ppl. have really captured the spirit of star trek, lol.

)not that i would care anyways. For me Star Trek died in 2004.)

Ooh, very well said RIP 2004, the grate bird would not be pleased.

Thank you again on your kind word about my picture and I am pleased you had a grate birthday. Star Trek online is full of Dicovery style ships, with far fetched size and weaponary. The new new Orleans upgrade is good but that's just because it not there design lol.

I don't think Orille will have individual ship designs, like you said it would be a pain keeping track of each ship and the cost of new CGI models every time there's a new ship.

It Is a shame we never got to see the fan made film Anaxar, that looked like it was ticking all the boxes for me. Just a good all rounder, plot, ship and cast?

Nhlaqgor In reply to jbobroony [2018-08-27 00:07:55 +0000 UTC]

Yes the Axanar trailer (idk how it was called) looked really promising and exciting!

It's a pity the ppl in charge killed it. THAT would have been a movie i wanted to watch, instead they made ST: DIS which was completely uninteresting to me. (please don't confuse, i do not hate it. I'm completely indifferent towards it -i simply do not care in the least.)

The problem is (although Axanar would have been interesting to me for other reasons) that Star Trek is no longer a show about keeping peace and solve problems in a different way, protecting a future that is worth all the struggle.

Maybe i the last years i have put some (emotional) distance between me and Star Trek. The funny thing is, now i see its flaws* of it much more clear than back then.

Yes, they are to ready to fight. No more peace at all cost and no more exploration, unless they are forced to.

I do like the new star trek, it's just that you could have called it any thing and it would be just as good. It didn't need to be star trek.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nhlaqgor In reply to jbobroony [2018-08-27 15:48:31 +0000 UTC]

Exactly!

I do like the 2009 movies for their entertainment value, but they are not really what i love about Star Trek. (Don't get me started with DIS Β )

Personally i think they would be better movies if they wheren't Star Trek at all, but a whole new original francise. But i think movie producers (especialy Hollywood) are way too spineless nowadays to take such a risk, the only thing they seem to think about is making billions of money. If a movie does not reach at least a billion $$$ it is considered a failure... so much about greed.

Anyways, the das thing is that writers seem to have immense trouble to come up with compelling stories or stories that are not about some generic villian who wants to destroy the earth (again). I mean come on, since when was that a thing anyways in Trek?

I mean before the TNG movies...

jbobroony In reply to Nhlaqgor [2018-08-27 15:56:05 +0000 UTC]

I know, Picard must say every time he starts up the Enterprie "just popping out to save the earth, back In an hour" lol

I don't know why they don't let the fans send scripts in... fan made episode are way more exciting because of this budgets.
And it may even reconnect them with the fans and heal some wounds.

The 2009 film are like the legitimate child of Star Trek and Starship Trooper lol

"The 2009 film are like the legitimate child of Star Trek and Starship Trooper lol"

Β

You know sometimes when i see what some Star Trek fans love about Star Trek (if it's the battles or the action) i tend to think that I am the one who completely missunderstood Star Trek from the beginning. On the other hand if thoes "fans" had lived in the 60's or even 80's i doubt they would have become Star Trek fans in the first place.

Isn't it more like that the producers have dumbed down Star Trek so much you can't even reckognize it anymore?

For a moment remove all references to "Federation" and know characters/ship designs and Star Trek races, what's left?

A generic Sci Fi story, that could take place in Star Wars univers, or any other imo.

I think the producers or the ppl. in charge somehow took away Star Treks "soul" or Katra (if you're a Trek fan )

Heck, even Jonathan Frakes once said that he thinks that what Star Trek fans wanted to see was more Action. Of course i can't speak for other ppl. (and i wouldn't want to anyways) but action never was a the main focus of Trek for me. It was tension and sense of wonder, but it seems that movie makers know of only noe way to create this: Moaaar Explosions...

Was there somekind of mass hypnosiss in the last ten years i somehow missed? Β

Yes I know what you mean, just look at wrath of khan... half the budget of the motion picture and one of the best films. It shows the plot is more important than the fx.

We know all CBS and paramount want is money zombies, but it comes at a cost of substance.
I hear they want to do a show on pkie, you know that's gonna step right on the original series feet.
And they will not care at all... they just want to hear the cash draw open and close.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nhlaqgor In reply to jbobroony [2018-08-28 11:09:55 +0000 UTC]

I think it's a symptom of hollywood and the whole filmindustry that they get more and more greedy. I think they all try to emulate Marvels success and fail terribly, because they underestimate the cultural influence Marvel always had with its comics over decades, which they can now profit from.

Just look at Star Wars, they produce one movie after another and each one becomes less and less successful, because of oversaturation and lack of "heart". (that's what i heard, i don't consider myself as a SW fan so i'm not an expert.)

Now Star Trek is desperately trying to find a concept for a series that gets accepted by its fans, which will never really work since Star Trek fans are constantly at odds with each other about the question what Star Trek makes Star Trek in the first place.

In the early 90s to the 2000 Star Trek had a huge run with 4 series directly succeeding each other, but i think something like this wouldn't be possible nowadays since social media accellerates oversaturation of the fans immensely. A series with a slow pace and feel like TNG would compeltely and utterly fail (i'd be happy to be proven wrong) nowadays since ppl. would quickly get tired of it and deconstruct it because of these "flaws".(which i would heartly welcome tbh)

It seems that People are used to see fast paced, overarching storys with characters that are constantly at odds with each other. (see the walking dead and GoT for example).

A cast like TNG would be viewed as totally boring and uninteresting. Maybe it's some kind of progress (which i doubt) or ppl. are just spoiled and have developed a mindset over the years, where they expect that 90% of a cast need to be selfish assholes. (sorry for the expression Β  )

What i would love to see would be a starship based Trek series with overarching story (NOT a war story!) and characters that are smart and show a sense of style where they have grown out of doing petty quarreling (idk if that's the right expression) with each other all the time. As in good Star Trek tradition, conflict should come from the outside, not inside.

I don't mean that there should be really boring stuff like 80% of TNG episodes (let's be honest here, lol), what i meant before with "slow" was the feel of the series and cast (and even ship). which is a certain feel of cozyness that makes you want to live in that future, not some gritty Battlestar feel. (don't get me wrong i liked some aspects of BSG, but it's a completely differnt beast.)

As i said, tension and conflict should come from the outside and there's no need for another long war, i know the Dominion war was a fan favourite, but for the wrong reasons imo, Trek never was about war and never should be imo.

If a production company rather wants to make NBSG 5.0 (idk how many series have tried to reproduce NBGS) instead of Star Trek, then they should create something on their own, instead of dispraising Star Trek even more than it already is.

Sorry for the Wall of text.

Well lol.... That's quite a read. Needed to take the day of work for this one lol.
But joking aside, you nailed it on the head, every thing!
Star trek is about out side conflict and human failures are behind us.
We try and talk before shoot, defend before attack and heal before wound.
The star trek we see now, litrally tried shooting before talking lol.
We do love in a adrenaline filled world, with 10 second breaks between bangs and unfortunately it sells.
I don't see it changing soon either, we will always have reruns or switch to Orville lol

Besides fans trying to get the specs for the ships dimensions, one question is how can such a curved ship with a curved window set have such flat floorplan
