Description
A companion piece to "Fresh Meat" drawn around the same time (winter, mid-2014). I moved on to other things because it didn't break new ground but the drawing was still strong enough to warrant a full-colour version. I have many more unfinished works so a source of recent inspiration can expect a short reprieve.Related content

I don't know why it made think a very dark version of CoN, but if there was such a thing ti would fit. I like this!

Looks really good, especially the fur looks real. I like how you based the proportions of the arms and legs on hyenas instead of humans.

Whatever Tolkien purists say I'm very impressed with the time and effort Peter Jackson's put into costumes, props and creature designs. Thanks for the awesome feedback!

I for one would love to play a game based on jflaxman's concepts.
It would be sickening, but enjoyable in a relieving cathartic sort of way.

Hey, wait, I recognize that type of shield; early-germanic and celtic tribes abused the shit out of that pattern, hell, even inspiring the romans to make the scutum to begin with due to the sheer tacit versatility of the tower-shield design-principle. A fine piece, the name definitely fits though.

You've got a good eye for this stuff! I thought the muted colours, grimy look and realistic wargear would make this picture more convincing. You could take it as an antidote to catwalk-model fantasy!

I'm afraid most of viewers (myself included) will think of dungeon and dragon's "gnolls" seeing this guy.
If this was your intention, then I gotta say it's the best gnoll I've seen for decades, so far away from those "sooo cool" xxi century metrosexual monsters and bodybuilders you can google everywhere...
If this was not your purpose (and sorry the misunderstanding), it is still a great job, and, of course, the best companion for "Fresh meat". Congratulations.

Thank you very much! I'm aware of the "gnoll" association, which is why I haven't done much in this vein, even though it's been popular. I thought a darker, grimier look would be more appropriate than the "sooo cool" stuff you describe!

Indeed it is more appropriate that way! Why do we (they) have to fuck up all the good ol' "designs"? Now vampires sparkle, orcs are green bodybuilders and gnolls are sexy furries... Eck!
But please, do more in this way. I promise not to use my old D&D labels with it!

Very nice, but is he undead(or she). Usually gnows are depicted more vibrant in colour. But probable the setting is such.

The colours might be more vibrant in other times and places - the dim light and mist here tone them down. This guy's not meant to be undead (though you're welcome to view him as such!)
