Description
I tried to make a stamp.I see way too many writers making a character that's pretty much a sue to push the story along instead of depth....
What happenned to good old character development?
The thing that bothers me is how much they are embraced....it makes me a bit sad. How come good stories are pushed to the back over these people....why?
Edit: ( Ironically I typed out "righter" instead of "writer" at first....I've decided it fit....they try to use the characters to make the story "right". But they fail, so this is now the word I use for people who do use character development.)

I don't know if I see Cilan as a sue personally. He doesn't seem TOO amazing at anything. I'd argue Ash is one way too often.

Katara and Tai Li from The Last Airbender. Would they be sues? All the boys fall over them, and they whine about their pasts a lot.

Jiyuria In reply to ellymango [2012-07-30 12:37:52 +0000 UTC]
Not necessarily. That doesn't define a sue.
The lack of serious faults does and each of them actually does have faults. Tai Li is a bit distant and too hyper and it is played to a fault a long with other things.
Katara can be controlling, easily upset, and can hold quite the grudge.
All of these things are played as faults.
Plus almost everybody in the main group had at least a few people fall for them. (Aang included.)
A Mary Sue is more a Mary Sue if they have no faults and stick out as such even in their worlds story line.

It's fine the term is sort of getting a bit changed around by people lately. It's hard to know the actual definition.
For instance a sue is someone who's too perfect for the world they're in etc.
For instance very few faults (that are addressed as faults).
A sue isn't someone who makes sense in their world but may not in ours either. A sue is a sue if they're too perfect for the world they're in's rules and what is stated the norm there.

He is an intresting character but he has some major sue traits.
For example he learned to ride an aircraft in one day and pawnd equalist pilot like it was nothing .

I don't know I didn't mind him much.
But that was certainly pushing it. If he had more screen time I might agree.
He seemed to lack many faults but he didn't have enough screen time to really establish them either.

But now that i think about it most of the time lot of canon characters are big sues.
Some are such sues that is almost scary 0.0

One thing to keep in mind what makes a sue isn't being super strong or having great strength or being good at something.
It's that in their world they're better then the norm.
If you had a world where stuff is established as the norm for everybody but they'd be a sue in our world's mechanics that'd be different.
Examples of this being if someone lived in a world where they could use powers to do flips and move faster etc and this was the norm that's not very Sue-ish. (As long as the characters weren't perfect etc in personality and some others weren't or in looks.)
But if you have a world where people aren't normally that strong or have restrictions and the character can do everything with ease that's a different story.
It's important to take the norms of the world they live in into context too.

Alphonse from The Secret Show (a British kid's cartoon). He was a sculptor, then a resturanteur, then an opera singer, and then a musician, and then I don't know what he was after that. He says art takes many forms. In other words, he likes to change professions for no reason. In just one day, he managed to have Anita fall madly in love with him and have Victor hate him. Everyone else, except of course for the villains, loves him! The only flaw he actually seems to have is he's a crybaby (if any of his art is stolen or destroyed, he just has an angsty fit).

Two different colored hair, she's smart, pretty and she has both Scar's children and gets with Edward Elric. She comes off as a huge Mary Sue fanfic character. (Plus she's way too old for him and she looks even older then she is. Also a Mary Sue trait.)
I mean seriously, how many times are they forced with one person but get with another who they truly liked but liked both? Despised each other first or rather she rejected him but he wanted her so badly he eventually got her?
Plus she could dance and sing and everyone was enticed by her beauty. Excuse me what?
Plus she has the tragic past cliche. The way too powerful for her situation cliche (she's able to take care of herself in a world where most none alchemists aren't without any fighting training of any sort, what the fuck?)
The majority of people love her unless they're evil or a love rival.
Plus so much more.
(Plus her personality was rotten, she was selfish and such she had very few redeeming qualities.)
She's the textbook definition of a sue.

I actually was thinking Matt from Digimon too. I liked him when I was younger but as I grew up I realized he got everything handed to him, Tai had to work, Matt just got it.
Matt becomes a rockstar who is the first guy to get to Mars. And he's good looking with like a ton of fans and he gets a girl he doesn't even match and did nothing for.

I count him as a canon sue too, and his sue qualities "shine" in ever episode he is in.
I am starting to think that the producers of Digimon Zero Two had a grudge against Digimon Adventure.
Everything in Digimon Zero Two seems that it was made to make Digimon Adventure look bad.
There are a lot of sues in Digimon Zero Two...

I was always really bothered by Matt later on. I mean seriously, he got everything.
I actually liked Ken because even though he came out as a major stu at first, it was later explained it was because he wanted to be perfect and he let himself falter. He wasn't as perfect as he seemed he wanted to make up for his brother's death. To the point he shunned everything but study and work until it started to break him.
The ending of that season made me shun it, I think it's a shame though.
Season 3 was actually not bad comparatively but everyone despises it. I personally think it's one of my favorites.
Also Matt just got fucking everything handed to him, fucking everything. So did Mimi for that matter. The second season ruined the first season for me. I can't even watch it anymore.
I can watch season 3 though. This one: [link]
I always liked how things were rarely ever handed to them and when they were it was ripped away.
Takato got Guilmon a digimon he designed, but it was immature and hard to handle and they both had to mature to grow up.
Rika got Renamon and who she wished for to have strength but she couldn't wield it right until she matured.
Henry had Terriermon who lost himself when he digivolved so he feared it and he was troubled that he hurt digimon not knowing they were real at the time.
That was some actually deep story telling.

Digimon Adventure is a gateway into Digimon, but Digimon as a whole does not hold up.
The fact that they blundered Digimon Zero Two so badly but the fans still ate it up has had a negitive impact on the Digimon franchise.
There is nothing good about Digimon Zero Two, but it does not ruin Digimon Adventure.
To me there is nothing after Digimon Adventure, and that the kids of Adventure just arbitrarily got a new set of clothes.
I don't despises season 3, its just not my cup of tea.
It does bug me that they once again decide to tie there games with the anime when they brought in Ryo,
but it was handled much better then when they did it with Ken.

If you want to deny the second season of Digimon existed then sure it doesn't ruin it, if you acknowledge it as canon which it unfortunately is, I'd say it ruins a lot.
I wouldn't say all of season 2 is bad, I mean Ken was decent and a few side characters were cool but the rest not so much....
I didn't mean you. I meant the majority brush it off and frankly despise the series saying it shouldn't exist because it wasn't enough like the classics which is frankly wrong, it does an amazing job of being a stand alone series that has real character development over more then one episode as well as real effort to get through things. Not just classifying it as Digimon it's a really good series.
Ryo seemed a bit forced but they didn't force us to love him so that was good.
