Description
Edit: Eyes tutorial, featuring this same character, is up: [link]A sister tutorial to the last Cleaning up Lines Tutorial [link] I really appreciated the feedback that I got, so thank all of you, and I'm glad it was helpful to some.
A lot of people mentioned that it's hard for them to sketch cleanly, so the last tutorial didn't really apply. I have the same problem, and it takes a looooot of extra work on paper (erase, erase, draw, erase) to get pencil lines clean enough to start coloring off of. So.... that's why I often turn to Digital Inking!
Here are some of the ways that I do Digital Inking. I know the "trace directly over the original image" is probably the most common method, but it's hard to do without a tablet and also hard for people with unsteady hands, so that's why I talked a bit about other methods.
As usual, comments/feedback appreciated so I can incorporate them into future projects. Thanks and

me? I just ink the drawing and either use the brush and color the image... or use the fill tool, so this won't help me much...
or will it?

What a wonderful tutorial!! I've always hand-inked, cause I don't have a tablet and have noo coordination with the mouse but after reading your tutorial and learning I can use the pen tool, I'm all for it!!

Truely a fantastic tutorial! And do you know the best thing? It includes stuff most people don't know!
Darn, you know, I'm pretty experienced in flash and the pen tool, but the export and the varied preassure I had NO ideas about.
Thanks for writing this! Fantastic tutorial! Truely beautiful too =3

Yay someone like me who can't use a tablet for drawing nicely. <3 I use the pen too method, only instead of simulating pressure, I just go back and add line weigh, as if I were drawing with a real pen. :3 Cool tutorial though.

Ah. I don't have Photoshop. Actually, I only have an old version of Paint shop Pro. But, the features are still similar enough.
This helped a lot. Wah, Now I might actually use it for more than changing the format of pictures.
Lovely job.
And cute picture, too XD;;

I've been looking into this type of art so this is a really good start for me.
Just one question. o-o
What the heck is a tablet? D:

joulee In reply to Galaxy-Panda [2006-03-21 05:13:31 +0000 UTC]
It's like a pad with a pen, and you use that as a mouse. It's like using a pen for your computer!

Wow, i knew it would be helpfull to check this out! You have the talent to make things simple enough i'm still a bit newbie with my x-mas present tablet, and otherwise a lazy bastard to do anything but sketch in traditional way.... so i've started to finish my pics with PS but mostly had to find out things by myself. This leads me to the question i need to ask: does the paint bucket really work UNDER the outline layer? Or is there also something else that has to be done, like linking layers or something. Otherwise these two tutorials have been very helpful, thank You

joulee In reply to ToyToe [2006-03-21 05:12:07 +0000 UTC]
You can select "all layers" when using the paint bucket, and it will recognize the lines of any layer.

Never knew how the pen tool worked ^^
Helped a lot.
Hope you don't mind me asking, but do you happen to know what the scalpel function in photoshop is for? (Except making colored rectangles on my picture that won't go away anymore?)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
joulee In reply to Firretayl [2006-03-21 05:11:22 +0000 UTC]
scalpel? Oh, it's an image slicer. It helps you slice an image up into different components. This is generally pretty useful for webdesign, if some parts of your image are a part of a different table or what not.

Firretayl In reply to joulee [2006-03-21 07:36:15 +0000 UTC]
I see. For normal, single picture works it's not needed.
Thanks for the info.
If I accidentially make some slices do you know how I can remove them again?

what version of PS are you running? Simulate pressure might be a feature of a later version. I'm not positive though. I use CS2
