Description
I have received a lot of notes recently, asking about macro filters. So here you go, the myth revealedI use them for ALL my macro shots, and if you ask me - I'm more than happy with the outcome.

Thank you very much for this guide. This is an excellent alternative. I really don't feel like shelling out $500 for the 60mm 2.8 macro.

My pleasure! It's funny, I was a student with little to no money when I wrote this. I could easily afford a macro lens now, but I just don't see the point anymore, too used to macro filters

I'm in the same boat as you. Technically, I could get the professional 105mm f2.8, but I've come to appreciate my earned savings much more. I'd rather watch it grow and continue creating with minimum spending.
I'm definitely buying some macro filters haha. Do you have a recommendation for a specific brand? I also shoot with the Nikon D7100.

I'm assuming that most people use them in conjunction with a macro lens, but I was wondering, what would happen if you put a macro filter onto, say, a 40-150mm lens?

Question here
Why are you calling them filters? Those are lenses if I'm not totally wrong
But you convinced me to buy a set of close up filters/lenses Not that happy with the outcome of the reverse lens-technique.

Hmm good question! I think both terms are equally right; I chose to use "filters" as they remind me more of filters such as the pol filter rather than of actual lenses

Hey I do arrowheads, and it's hard to capture the very very fine details of the flaking pattern. If you have time please take a look at what i mean.
If you have any suggestions as to how i can make it turn far more detailed please let me know. The camera I'm working with is a Canon Rebel XS or Canon EOS 1000d, different names. With a 18-55mm lens i believe.
Hear from you soon,
D. Pierce

THank youuu for making this! I was just trying to research macro filters myself Do you usually buy yours at amazon.com?

That's where I bought my set, yes

So the set I got only seems to fit on my 55 - 250 lens but they don't fit on my 18 - 55 lens, even though they are both 58mm's. What would be the right macro filters for my 18 - 55 lens, if I wanted to get a set for it?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Jules1983 In reply to gerrish [2011-08-21 09:32:17 +0000 UTC]
Now this is really odd, if they both have a diameter of 58mm the filters should work for both.

They don't, I don't understand why. The Macro filters I have are "Zeikos".

Are they too big or too small for the other lens or what is the problem?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
gerrish In reply to Jules1983 [2011-08-21 18:12:32 +0000 UTC]
It seems they are a bit too big.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Jules1983 In reply to gerrish [2011-08-21 20:16:06 +0000 UTC]
Hmm well in that case the lens must be a different size. I know I have a few that are Ø52 (perfect for my filters) but one lens is a Ø62 one. Have you checked the cap that goes with that particular lens?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
gerrish In reply to Jules1983 [2011-08-22 02:31:16 +0000 UTC]
The cap says "E-58mm" on the inside part of it. And for some reason, the cap does not fit on the 18-55mm lens either, even though it says Ø58mm.

i guess that we have to focus manually .. right ?
i'm buying a set of 4 filters .. x1 x2 x4 x10
so should i use them all together or one at time .. and why theres x1 or x2 when x10 is more strong ?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Jules1983 In reply to pharaohking [2011-02-28 19:51:47 +0000 UTC]
You would need to focus manually with the +10 one, the others should be fine to autofocus.
I guess there's different ones for different effects. If you only want to "zoom in" a tiny bit, you'd use the +1 or +2 filter. The +10 filter works perfectly for macro shots though. Just try different settings, just one filter, or 2 or all of them at a time, whichever works best for you

thank u so much .. well one more silly question .. i have the standard lens cuz i dnt have any lens yet .. so this should be the 55 mm right ?

Sorry for the very late reply, I'm really really busy at the moment. What you need to do is find the cap that belongs to your lens and look on the inside of it, there it should state the diameter you need.

Generally speaking? I have a polarizer filter that I usually use for landscape/nature shots as it really brings out the blue in skys.

Jules1983 In reply to LenaDavid [2010-10-28 18:57:46 +0000 UTC]
Look on the inside of the cap that goes with your lens to figure out the size (diameter) of filters you need. It should be something like 55mm, 67mm etc. Hope that helps!

LenaDavid In reply to Jules1983 [2010-10-28 19:11:47 +0000 UTC]
its 67 mm .. so this is the number for my camera macro filters ??

Yes! You would need to go to Amazon or whatever other (online) store and look for macro filters with that specific size like I just did here: [link] - good luck
