This is absolutely awesome. The manga screentone coloring style is so unique and has its own beauty, and we've been blessed with technology to help us out, but it isn't blatantly obvious! It still takes time to learn...

I will have to try this out~! I always just used the screentone pattern for backgrounds and stuff since I didn't really know how to use it (or get the different patterns).
Will this work in any version of Photoshop? I only have CS 2.

The Pattern Stamp Tool in Photoshop? Well, it's possible to work with that tool, too... but it's way too inconvenient. I think with the Paint Bucket, Selection Tools and mask you can work more acurate and can easier reworking the filled areas... but this is only my opinion^^'

i see. also, at step 2, instead of filling the whole image with the pattern, can i select the area i want to fill, then choose the "yin-yang" icon?

Yeah, there isn't just one way of doing it. I explained it a bit more detailed, so the readers understand the function of the mask better.
