Description
*Edit* Sorry for the repost... But I updated the image. This one has much better contrast.*This piece is a lot more complex that it looks. It looked really bad when I was finished with it, so I cut off the top at an angle, polished it, and then added a battuto technique to the side.
It's a three hour piece. A cane pickup incalmo switch axis... After I battutoed the sides and cut the top it looked much MUCH better. I quite like it now!
It's about 16" tall

Very cool to see something so different featured!
I very much like the "scaled" appearance of the blue area, and it was a good choice to cut the top off at an angle...it makes it look more interesting and plays into the green curves.

this makes me curious as to whether you combine a piece like this with a fountain of some sort, it would look amazing (though it already looks incredibly beautiful) with water trickling over it.

Flawless and stunning. This piece reminds me of a multitude of beautiful things, like a peacock's feathers, swaying grass, and gray pebbles on the bottom of a stream. It also has the gentle shape of something from the far East-- very well done.

Hehehe. Thanks! I guess to me it doens't appear as complicated because I know all the techniques. But to someone who doesn't know that much about glassblowing, I could see how it would appear pretty complex.

Superb craftmanship can be seen within your work. I understand the play on words of it not being gorgeous when you first removed it from the furnace. Though with the hand done work it became a beautiful swan. Well done word play on a children's story. And even more so on your craftmanship.

LaughingTree In reply to Firretayl [2005-05-31 10:23:03 +0000 UTC]
Well, the actual blowing of the piece took 3 hours. There was also time involved in the setup, the cane pulls, and the surface texture I added later. Total, it's atually closer to 6 hours.

Thanks so much! I created all my glasswork at Ohio State in their glass studio. As for how do I make things out of glass... I'm not sure if I can just answer that question. That's quite an open ended question. It can be fairly complicated!

This is breathtaking! I am curious about the techniques you used. I assume this is glassblown. What is battuto, and how do you do it?
I like the shape of it especially, and the angle at which you cut off the neck is very effective. I like the pattern of what look almost like thumbprints on it, and the colors you chose.

LaughingTree In reply to PatGoltz [2005-05-31 09:52:15 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for your interest. Battuto is an italian technique used to create those circular imprints in the glass. It's created using a grinding machine that has a rounded disc on it. They come in all different grits depending on how much material you want to remove. Basically I hold the piece up to the grinding disc until it creates that concave shape, I then move the piece a little bit and do it again next to it. Over and over and over again until I cover the area I want textured. I can then either use a finer grit to get a more polished look, or I can add a surface treatment (I use a specific hand cream) that takes away the frosted look that the lower grit leaves and it leaves that smooth, yet foggy appearance. I really like the way it looks that way. And it takes MUCH less time than trying to regrind every single indentation with a finer grit (Which I've done before)
