The only time I would ever "pose as a conservative" is if I was trying to lull a Republican into a false sense of security so I could steal his wallet and give it to a homeless guy. It's just a funny gag line, like pretty much everything Reagan ever said in front of a microphone.

I swear, it's like the people who genuinely argue for the tiniest possible government don't even own a google; there are plaenty of sterling examples of what happens to a nation state when its government ceases to be a functioning entity, and they all end up looking like Mogadishu.

Aye. It's not as if "as little as possible" isn't a good guideline for law and regulation, but it needs to be tempered by "as much as necessary". Whether it's enforcement of contracts, road construction, food and drug safety or fire departments, there's a lot of things that a government is in fact necessary for.

And no matter what one might think of Reagan otherwise, that quip was blatant pandering to a certain crowd, and he really should've been ashamed of himself for that. It may have earned him some short-term brownie points with those people, but in the process he's had a lasting influence on political discourse and imbued a significant share of an entire generation with the overly simplistic notion that "government = bad". In reality it's much more complex, of course. Specific decisions by specific administrations can be good or bad, and so can political systems as such, but the solipsistic notion that there should be no government at all is asinine. So really, what was he thinking?

Reagan once stood up in front of a group of decorated combat veterans and told them that he had been right there alongside them with a film crew when they had liberated the Buchenwald concentration camp, when in fact he had spent the war in Hollywood making movies and had helped edit camp liberation footage; I don't think the man was even capable of shame.

Nnnope, just a joke, because Luna has kinda scary implications. Ronald Reagan was the worst president of the 20th Century, but being a comedy actor at heart, he had more of a talent for a funny gag line than actually running a superpower.

Nixon opened up China for trade-- which brings its own realpolitic problems, but also gives us a direct means of economic control over them in the form of "buying their cheap plastic junk"-- and got us the hell out of Vietnam, though; he also signed the Endangered Species Act into law. By modern standards, he would be considered a goddamn commie pinko libtard by most rightwingers. He was crooked as a dog's hind leg and a horrid racist bastard, make no mistake, but he was actually a pretty good President in terms of "useful things accomplished for America". Cryin' shame he turned out to be a corrupt, paranoid loon.
