Description
so Ive had a few people ask me how i do my paintings (even tho i only just started doing them and finsding my style aha)so i decided to just make a little process tutorial
i did it of this painting: Β
I also even added my 3 FAVOURITE/ MOST USED brushesΒ
I literally use these brushes for everything
the first i use for sketching and lining, 2nd i use for colouring and 3rd for details and painting ;v;
a few things I feel i should point out/say:
- This is how I personally paint, you DO NOT have to do it the same as me and actually i urge you to try and find your own style and process. Tutorials like this are great as a guide to look at and get ideas for finding your own process
- also the brushes you are free to use but also dont try to use them as "ooh i have this artists brush itll make me just as good as them" this is wrong (not saying anyones like this ive just seen it happen before so im pointing it out)
The brush does not make the artist! just an important thing to note
you can completely ignore this or whatever i just thought i should say it
hope you like my process ;v;
character used belongs to: bananamantis
Program used: Paint Tool Sai

I have to say, I used this brush once and fell in love, I literally use only this one to paint now

I'm super sorry, but can't read the brushes, which I really would like to know. I adore how the texture looks.

You just lock the layer
When you lock th opacity of the layer you can colour only on what's already been drawn there

If you don't mind me asking, what is rendering?? ;3; I feel silly for asking but I'm not familiar with the term ;0;

So,Β like, when you say your flat colors and shade/color lines take 2/5 minutes, do you sort of just wing it and let things be where they fall, or do you take time to refine refine refine everything until it's just how you like it? Is the time just practice?

I didn't actually time myself I guessed tbh
The flat colours doesn't take long cause I just colour in the pic with the characters colours and patterns
With shading I make a new layer pick a colour that goes nice and shade where I want shading
Doesn't have to be super neat when placing the flat colours and shading because you can fix things when rendering but try to keep it fairly neat
After I shade in the pic I colour the lineart
This doesn't take me too long
I have a weird colour picking process that's hard to explain ahaha
All the refining and stuff happens during rendering

Do you change brush sizes a lot?

Ponacho In reply to HeadlessEffigy [2014-09-08 00:29:43 +0000 UTC]
Of course
Not for the sketch tho
But for colouring and rendering yes, you need to change brush size a lot depending on what bits you're working on

I love this ;o; is it okay if I give it a go? (just to test how this process looks with my own style =u=, I'll link it if I do manage to succeed LOL)

;3; Drew this using the technique~ Really loved the rendering stage and what the time you put into it produces <3

You're one of the very few people I know that doesn't finish the lineart before coloring o:

Ponacho In reply to gortholomew [2014-07-31 04:31:51 +0000 UTC]
no need to do so for paintings ;v; cause you can alway paint over and fix it ;v;

True~
I mostly do pixel work so it's much harder to sprite without a clean outline
