Description *If you want to try this out, here is the lineart I used~ [link]

I've gotten requests to make a coloring tutorial, but never made one before. I decided to color a simple headshot as an example~

This is a PHOTOSHOP CS tutorial. I used CS3, but it should apply to previous versions of PS as well.

Let me know if you have any questions~ I hope this tutorial is clear, but I'm not sure it is. haha.

Question from ~fly-again "Do you have a special mode for your brush? Multiply, normal, low opacity and flow?"

I usually use the "Airbrush Hard Round" Brush (third brush type in the default brush list). XD At least that's what its called in Photoshop. Or, the "Hard Round Brush" (first brush in the default brush list.

Opacity is usually set somewhere between 80-100% unless I'm doing something that requires a lower opacity.

Flow is usually at 85%.

All brushes are used in normal mode.

The "Airbrush Hard Round" Brush is good for coloring and shading because it responds well to tablet pressure.

I use the "Hard Round Brush" to draw lineart and also to draw detailing, such as the strands of hair in the "hair overpaint" layer.

cool. I think mine's a 22 inch. Because on different computers I've used, sometimes the photoshops are slightly different.

Very clear and concise tutorial! I found your step-by-step methodology extremely helpful. Thanks, also, for the shortcut tips -- very useful for those of us new to painting in Photoshop.

I've read sooo many tutorials and i still don't understant what is that 'multiple'-layer? I've allways drawn with ordinary layer...

creating a multiply layer on top of your line art basically allows you to paint on top of your lineart without covering it. Think of it as a coloring book effect.

MiSmAtChEd In reply to SemeMomoshiDesu [2009-05-03 13:02:58 +0000 UTC]

It's multiPLY and it's one of the colour blending modes in Photoshop. It blends white completely and overlays darker colours while letting the background be visible underneath (like a highlighter pen or such). There's a good explanation in a book on Google, here: http:// books.google. com/books?id=3HK6rrxHQUYC& printsec=frontcover#PPA368,M1
(had to get rid of those stupid ' icons, so copy to addressbar and remove spaces..)

You can test it by opening a picture in Photoshop. Create a new layer on top of the background and fill it with white. In normal mode, the picture is white, but with the white layer in Multiply mode, you see only the background. Then try the same with a black to white gradient and see what happens.

Γ„r du bΓ€ttre pΓ₯ svenska? TyvΓ€rr pratar jag inte finska

Just experiment with it. It's simply a way of blending colours that can work to your advantage. There are lots of basic Photoshop tutorials online which cover blending modes as well

No, I don't speak swedish at all

I think I do better how I have allways drawed, with normal layers...

hey thanks a lot i've only recently started to use digital work and this has really cleared up a lot of the doubts i had.. i don't have photoshop though D: i find it to be to expensive for the mac and can't seem to be hable to download a free version or a trial version that works with mine.. S: i'm using corel painter essentials though and it totally allows me to work with layers i hope it has the multiply mode D: i've only managed to work just piling one layer over the other ones and ending up messing up my base image.. or just doing a really good draft at first and messing up later but this has really cleared up some stuff and when i do get photoshop i think it will prepare me D: so sorry for the longest comment you'll probably ever have

Yay! I've always loved your style of colouring. I usually just make the lineart the multiply layer and put my colours under that, the way I've been taught. But You way looks so neat! I believe I'll try it.

And, this is extra awesome since I have CS3!

Thank you!

Oh, by the way, would you use the same technique for coloring clothing and things of the such? I always have a hard time with the folds especially...
