Description This is partially for fun and partially because I need some fan art to put on my table at Animazement this year.

I'm not that happy with it, but hey. It's better than like any painting I've ever done ever. I'll probably go back and touch it up a little at some point. My favorite parts of the whole thing are the two monsters behind the TARDIS, the sky, and the interior of the TARDIS. In other words, everything that's not all that important. Pff.

I also feel like the Doctor looks a bit weird, though I can't really decide why. Hmmmmm. Also, I think the whole image is probably too dark.

Anyway, critiques welcome, as always. If I need to change something large, it probably won't get done, but small things and color/lighting tweaks I will do.

I really, really need to redo this piece. I like it a lot, but everything you've pointed out needs fixing, and I've gotten much better at digital painting since I made this.

Thanks for the advice! I'll keep it in mind should I ever get around to remaking this.

You're quite welcome! I hope you do get around to re-doing it sometime- this is brilliant, and if you've gotten better since then? I'm really looking forward to the result.

Ooh, very nice! I like how the light comes out of the TARDIS and how it makes the rest of it look really dark. The planets in the background are awesome!

I think the reason you theink the doctor looks a little awkward is because his body seems to be a bit like a solid block than flexible mass of flesh and bone. In other words, there's no bend in his spine what-so-ever.

But other than that, this is an excellent pic. Keep up the good work.

No need to fix it anywhere but in your head (so you can avoid it in the future). It's a great pic the way it is; spend your time making more awesome works.

I love the picture, it has been favorited.

Although, I do find the copyrights quite hilarious. I may quote the David Tennant one... if that's allowed XD

Yea, it probably could have done with a bit more contrast in the lighting to help make stuff jump out more. Though I love the atmospheric lighting you've got coming from the TARDIS.. Seeing that dust roll just really adds to the picture.

You've got a great picture here. I just think if you gave it some more strong contrast like you did behind the horns of the nearest beast it would make it even better. Keep up the good work!

I think this is pretty cool and well executed the only thing I can come up with is the light effect from the inside of the tardis, I imagine a sort of glow against the Doctor's silhouette, I think that's what's missing

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pythosart In reply to LizleMouton [2011-01-12 20:36:13 +0000 UTC]

I kind of did that, if you look closer. The glow was bigger, but it looked strange so I sort of killed it. XD

ll get the hang of it eventually.

Tolco492 [2011-01-12 17:49:49 +0000 UTC]

I think that this is a really good peice of work. I think the detail on the monster in the foreground is really good, and realistic. However, the monsters in the background, not so good, i.e. the monster in the second foreground, could have been slightly more detailed, and the mountail BG is a little shoddy, so try with different colours of shading, to make them seem less 2D. However the TARDIS interior and the gass escaping form the TARDIS, is sopt on, the lighting is perfectly proportioned to the lights in the TARDIS, and above all, realistic. The Doctor is also very detailed, very realistic, and proportioned to the height of the TARDIS. My only jibe with the TARDIS is that the word "BOX" is a little wonky, but tbh, all my little jibes dont matter, because this is much better than anything, I could ever acheive, and it really is very good, well done ))

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pythosart In reply to Tolco492 [2011-01-13 20:55:48 +0000 UTC]

I actually wanted to keep the monsters and the background silhouetted. Kinda like them that way C:

Yeah, I noticed the bit with the "BOX" there. I'll fix it this weekend when I mess with the contrast.

Thanks for the critique!

Love it~~ I think i'd be the only one excited to see giant monsters XD
I love the interior of the tardis and the lighting around it. <3 <3 and of course, the monsters.
I do think it is a bit too dark, or too muted? (could be just my monitor though) You could probably push the highlights on the front monster brighter/sharper, and/or maybe a bit around his leg?
Also, the only thing that slightly bugs me about the Doctor is his head overlapping the frame of the door. Its creating a bit of a tangent. Maybe move his head back, so we get a great silhouette of his head+hair?

I haven't sold at Animazement in a few years. It was always unfortunately scheduled around my finals, so it was never easy to get down there XD

Pythosart In reply to PencillCat [2011-01-13 21:02:17 +0000 UTC]

No, you're not the only one. I'd be all "Hang on a tick while I fetch my camera/sketchpad/other recording device!"

I'm going to mess with the lighting some this weekend. It also looks less dark to me because I'm running a custom script on my Firefox. dA is now dark gray and yellow as opposed to the painful grayish-green it usually is.

I think I'll move him around a bit. I kind of want his amazing hair to be more visible XD

Ooh, you go to AZ? Yayy more people! I'm dragging *p0rcelainbombshelL all the way from Florida so she can attend the con with me. This is only my second year :T It's much easier to go now than it was in middle school, because my high school runs on a modified year-round schedule, meaning that school ends for the summer an hour before Pre-Con starts XD How cool is that? I just drive straight to the con and get my parents to bring all my boxes of prints and such.

You haven't seen the new Convention Center, have you?

PencillCat In reply to Pythosart [2011-01-13 23:45:09 +0000 UTC]

I went twice, the last time being my junior year in college, two years ago. I think that's when the moved to the convention center? It was pretty spiffy, because my roommate and I got a table on the outside balcony.
I haven't attended a con since AWA '09, mainly because it's so expensive to get to cons from Maine. Plus I don't have much in terms of con-material at the moment. :/
I do plan on going again eventually, maybe do a con circuit one year. They are insanely fun.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pythosart In reply to PencillCat [2011-01-15 18:36:35 +0000 UTC]

Their first go in the RCC was in '09, so I guess that's two years ago numerically speaking.

I didn't get a table my first year, mostly because it was my first ever con and I didn't have a clue about all the stuff that goes down in one. Plus, my art wasn't too great. Late '09 was kind of my "big improvement year". I got a half table in the ballroom last year, but the table was too small and two of my friends in addition to myself were crammed behind it. I didn't really get out much. This year, I'm going to try to actually go see the con and pose for photos and such.

I really need to attend some other cons D: None of them but AZ are both nearby and during a break from school, though D: Sadface. My convention goal is actually London Expo, for some reason.

Yess, they are insanely fun! Is it just me or are you on a sort of pre- and post-con high in the time surrounding a convention?

albeus51 [2011-01-12 15:36:53 +0000 UTC]

Love the creatures they look amazing and fierce! I agree the whole think could be lightened a little bit and still maintain the same ambiance. This would also allow you to do some more detailing on the background monsters. The only proportion issue I noticed is his left forearm seems quite a bit longer than his upper arm. It might be the angle you were going for, but that stuck out to me as off. Great work, I always enjoy original, well crafted monsters and situations!

Pythosart In reply to albeus51 [2011-01-13 21:03:54 +0000 UTC]

Gonna fix it this weekend.

Actually, I really don't want to make the background monsters anything more than silhouettes. I really like them that way

Nice catch! I see what you mean. I'll fix that as well.

Thanks!
