Spike's scornful attitude towards his roots is Jade's pet peeve. She calls him ignorant and "as arrogant as a pony" for scoffing at his fellow dragons. Spike obviously doesn't take this very well.Related content

I didn't introduce Jade as a love interest for Spike, so those two actually go hand in hand. Yes, Jade develops a crush on Spike, but that doesn't influence their dynamic all that much.

Alright this is how i tough their discussion went:
(imagine them slowly rising their voices)
Spike: You know Jade it is Realy nice to meet another dragon that is not a jerk.
Jade: Wh-What do you mean?
Spike: Well the first dragon i met was a crazy savage who tried to kill me and the others i met during the dragon migration were bullies, jerks, tried to make me smash a phoenix egg AND THEN tried to kill me.
Jade: WHAT did you do to make the first dragon want to kill you?!
Spike: I was hungry and ate some of his gems...
Jade: Oh now it is explained, stealing form a dragon hoard not only is EXTREMELY RUDE but also, according to dragon society allows the oneΒ who had their hoard stolen to KILL theΒ thiefΒ on sight!
Spike: WHAT, this is ridiculous!
Jade: NO this is a dragon law and custom, oh and by the way HOW do you think that the Phoenixes are kept in check and doesn't overpopulate the wrold!?!
Spike: Then Dragon society is ridiculous!!!
Jade: WHAT!!! WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? A PONY? you sure is arrogant enough to be one!
Spike: well if not being a monster is being a pony then i'm one!!!!!
Jade: And once again you actΒ ignorant and as arrogant as a pony.
Spike: WHAT ISΒ WRONGΒ WITH YOU?!?!
Jade: What is wrong with YOU!!!?!!?!!?!!!
soooooooooooooo what do you think?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK i tough for some time and realized that the "ignorant and as arrogant as a pony" thing could indeed be true, not in the smaller societies like Ponyville. But in the Grimmer and Darker big cities like Manehattan.

I think it is out of character. It would be more along the lines of this:
Spike: So how are you liking Ponyville so far, Jade?
Jade: It's okay. The ponies are nice, but I kinda miss home... a lot.
Spike: I'm sorry.
Jade: It's the little things I used to do all the time that I just can't do anymore, because no one else seems to do them, you know.
Spike: Look at the bright side, though. Now you can try all kinds of new stuff!
Jade: I guess, but I still miss tail wrestling with my brothers.
Spike: Why would you wanna waste your time with tail wrestling if you can do all kinds of cool stuff, likeΒ ziplining or hanging out with friends?
Jade: I could do that before.
Spike: Yeah, but c'mon! Ponies are much better friends than dragons.
Jade: Excuse me?
Spike: Well, what I'm trying to say is that they're nicer in general.
Jade: Are you saying I'm not nice?
Spike: No, you're very nice, but you act more like a pony than a dragon.
Jade: Since when is being nice a pony thing?
Spike: Since all the dragons I've met before you are complete jerks. I can't say the same about ponies.
Jade: So everyone who doesn't act or think like you is a jerk? Where else have I heard that? Oh yeah, from every pony I have ever met before!
Spike: Geez, what is your deal?
Jade: My deal is that you ponies don't know anything about dragons, but you still think you're so much better than them! And I'm saying you ponies because you are just as arrogant and ignorant as them! It's always ruffians this, monsters that when you talk about us! Well guess what? YOU'RE a dragon! Deal with it, Spike!
Spike: How dare you talk so badly about my friends, our friends! They're the ones who took care of you since you got out of the forest! Would a dragon have done that!?
Jade: Would you know, oh amazing, fire breathing pony!?
Spike: WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!?
Jade: WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!?
When she had simmered down Jade realized she went too far in making her point, but refused to apologize. She was afraid that Spike either wouldn't listen to her or he would take her apology as a victory and learn nothing.
Spike felt that Jade had insulted his friends, the ones that had been so kind to take her in no less, and wasn't about to make the first move. Eventually Jade decided she wanted to end the silly argument and apologized. Spike, however, did not.Β
Twilight, who had purposely stayed out of the whole ordeal, decided it was time for her to intervene. She had a talk with Spike. Spike explained what happened and Twilight listened. When Twilight had heard the whole story she told Spike how Jade could have been offended by his words and that she was right about the ponies and Spike not knowing very much about dragons. When Spike still didn't seem convinced, Twilight asked him who the better dragon was at this moment. Spike pondered these words at night.
The next day he went to Fluttershy's to tell Jade he was sorry first thing in the morning.

I am not actually a good fanfic writer. I can come up with decent enough concepts, but my knowledge of the English language is a tad too limited for me to make the story look good. That and I'm just not very good at describing things in general. When I write fics, the chapters are too short because of my "to the point" writing style. I either do not set the mood enough or I give long, tedious descriptions simply because I am afraid I'm not describing enough. Mostly though, I don't get much further than stating what the characters are doing in a way more similar to reciting a grocery list than telling an actual story, using repetitive language to boot.

to tell you the truth i'm also not good with writing, or writing in English, or writing in my nativeΒ language either (witch is Portuguese (Brazilian), by the way). but i'm trying and training so i'll probably get better.

Well considering he was raised a pony all his life and considering that pretty much all of his interactions with his own kind have invariably ended with them either trying to beat him up or outright kill him...
... can you really blame him?
π: 0 β©: 1
QueenCold In reply to IAMELIPHAS [2013-07-11 14:31:39 +0000 UTC]
Not blaming him, but he is speciesist. Even though all of his interactions with his own kind have ended badly, he hasn't had many interactions with his own kind in the first place. He can still count all the dragons he met on both hands and he only has 4 fingers on each. The majority of them were social peers and may have just conformed to their leader. Both times he interacted with other dragons he did things to provoke them. I am not saying that it is okay to go around and smash eggs, but Spike and the ponies do approach dragons from a very ethnocentric angle. Maybe dragons consider it extremely inappropriate for a low-ranking dragon to defy the alpha of the group on his first day, especially when said alpha had been kind enough to give the omega a chance to join the group at all. The big green dragon's cave got invaded and his gems were eaten, to top it off Spike was rude when he got caught. Yes, Spike is a baby dragon, but if you believe dragons Spike's age are expected to know their place and other dragons have the authority to lay down the law, it all makes much more sense.
The dragons he met were one grumpy adult and a group of teenagers. Who knows, maybe other dragons consider them to be jerks too.

IAMELIPHAS In reply to QueenCold [2013-07-11 14:47:41 +0000 UTC]
Ah yes....
Yeah, not establishing dragons very well (let alone griffins or other non-pony residents of Equestria) I'd have to say is one of FIM's primary weaknesses. In fact, that would have made a rather excellent topic for a FIM movie come to think of it. Learn about dragons, how they interact, introduce a new dragon character or two that isn't a total jerkass. Find out where this "dragon code" stuff comes from...
... but nope. Instead we get... human high school. And a tacked on love interest (who I'm still convinced btw was supposed to be altworld shining armor until they changed him into a (poorly done) love interest), and an incredibly generic villain with the most implausible take-over-equestria plan yet. Because that whole setting hasn't been done over nine thousand times.

IAMELIPHAS In reply to QueenCold [2013-07-12 04:43:07 +0000 UTC]
I found it to be a contrived, cliche-ridden, plothole-filled mess that tried too hard to cover up its painful lack of good storytelling and character & plot development (the plot, let's face it, is basically a rehash of the first two episodes with none of the charm or originality.) with pop songs, pop culture references, and trying to play "where's waldo" with the background (not)ponies.
I mean For example: Sunset shimmer was implied (exposited actually) to be as studious, smart, and strong as Twilight. However, what we get instead is pretty much just a grown up version of Diamond Tiara, who's "schemes" only really work because everyone else around her has the intelligence and common sense of a moldy potato. Even in the end her "take over equestria plan" is one of the most hairbrained and implausible plans in the whole series (seriously, an army of... what? 100-300 zombie teenagers vs the whole of Equestria and the Crystal empire? I mean chalk it up to villainous power delusion if you want, but I've seen PARODIES of this sort of thing with more plausible "take over the world" plots.) and considering the rest of the villains' "take over Equestria" plans, that's just sad.
I mean, it's not enough to simply imply or exposit that your character has X or Y trait, you have to SHOW that they have these characteristics by the way they act, talk, and interact with the world around it. "Show Don't Tell" is the rule for good character design.
And don't even get me started on Flash Sentry. The most utterly useless character in the whole movie, and on top of that, the whole series. His only purpose seems to be "lawl we need an inoffensive love interest because it's a High School drama and we gotta fill the cliche." In fact, he's so bland and useless as a new character that as I've said I'm convinced he wasn't even supposed to be BE a new character/love interest, but instead was supposed to just be AltWorld Shining Armor (since he looks almost like what you'd expect SA to look like as a human, and since he has a VERY similar cutie mark/shirt design. Not to mention is few interactions actually do make more sense as SA than they do as a love interest) until the marketing department said "no no no we got to have a love interest in the story because that's what sells, but we don't have the time to flesh one out or develop a new script for one so improvise. Just take that shining armor human, call him something else, add a few blushes here and there, insert a scene or two at the beginning and end, and we'll call it a love interest. RUSH RUSH RUSH GOTTA SELL THOSE CREEPY TOYS TO COMPETE WITH MONSTER HIGH!"
He basically has ONE use in the entire story, and the only reason that even comes into play is because human Luna is a useless bugger who can't spot a literal cut-and-paste job in a world full of photoshopping, digital photography, etc.
Perhaps it could have been better, but probably not. Since High School Hell is such a bland and overused cliche that it's hard to get right, and even parody of it is starting to get overused.

I'm not a big fan either, but it was mildly entertaining in my view. Yes, the execution was poor for MLP's standards and the fact that they made Spike a dog just because he doesn't have hooves kind of concerns me, because it shows shallowness on the writers' part. I think I was just happy to see some new material. I liked the beginning of the movie, even though some things were never explained, such as why they were in the Crystal Empire in the first place. (I'm honestly getting sick of that place)
Spike's lines were good and what probably kept me from hating this.

This whole thing was basically Hasbro's decision.
Besides, all things considered he really could have been worse off. At least he didn't turn into an ant or bunny or a bear.
... Still, I do intend to lampshade that in my own fic.
"My new body appears to be some large... hairless ape-like thing. Well, mostly hairless anyway. I apparently seem to have hair on my head and arms and such...
Strangely, I also appear to be wearing some sort of heavy metal suit... steel by the feel of it. Armor, maybe? That's my guess, diary. If you've got any better ideas I'd like to hear them. Oh wait, you can't talk, that's right.
