I would call this one fire opal hahaha! I love the bright bold colors and the use of contrasting colors as well. Also, I like the simple tough of 3D gems in the mix as well! So, do you use india ink (or something like that) to stain the background black? Or do you do that in post processing?

Yeah, it's definitely no longer "lapis lazuli". It's just the line design that I used for the original Lapis Lazuli Breeze, which was all in blues.
I used Prismacolor pencils for the black background. It's a texture thing with me. India ink always winds up looking blotchy for me, but the colored pencil, though it takes a lot of effort, gives me the best-looking results.

I wasn't saying you named it wrong, I was just saying that what I would call it!
Wow, I know what it's like to shade a whole section darkly with prismacolors...
Thanks for the info

That's it. I am not going to draw again. You're awesomeness is killing me and makes me want to cry and sit in the corner and listen to the ballad music of Barry Manilow and Air Supply. LOL jk
Rachel, I love love love your coloring. It's hard for me to tell which one is colored better, the original or this one... both of them are terrific.

Ohhhh no you don't! You get right back out on that drawing board. You do fantastic stuff what with all those feather textures and everything. I just scrub at the paper with colored pencils and hope for the best.
I like both versions of this dragon, too. I intended them to be very different from one another so that they both would stand up well on their own.
Thanks again for your kind compliments.

Thanks!
While both versions have merits, I'm keen on the complex color scheme of the new version. I love throwing "sunset" themed schemes together.

I don't know which one I like better... the original seems to have more depth, but this one's colour scheme is simply superb - lively. And I just noticed the gem on his wing ^^ he's definitely beautiful.

Oh nice coloring on this one! I like the blue belly scales along side the red body scales. Has a neat look to it.

I think I like this coloration better. It's easier to see the details in his face and the purple is a lovely accent too!

It's also been done six years later, so there's some skill increase at work too. Thanks!

The original drawing took about six hours. Inking takes about four hours. Coloring on this version took about ten hours.
