Often when I see your work, I wonder"what can she do to top THAT?" And yet, you seem to keep getting better and better. Beautiful work

LOL - Would you believe, I wonder the same thing at the conclusion of every one of my major projects?
Thanks very much. This one is still one of my high points, but I just *might* have something to top it coming up the pike.

Hello! I love your firebird piece and was wondering if I could use it in a blog post featuring firebird artwork? You'll be credited and a link back to this deviation will be included, of course. Please let me know!

beautiful. I love how they seem to be out of the picture, while being the greatest part of it. And even if they're fire birds, the blue color makes it all more peaceful than firey... like a fire and dance of wisdom and hope.

Thank you!
The idea of Balance is a running theme in my artwork, though I don't always say so in the project descriptions. I like to experiment with different elements like these to see if I can get it to work out just right. Fortunately, this big bruiser was one of the successful attempts!

Thank you once again.
Those colors were so much fun to work with for this piece - I'm definitely going to be doing more like this.

The eyeball-searingness of the birds is somewhat diminished when you add in a nice, cool-coloured background like that. Makes it easier to look at for long periods of time

It's certainly better-balanced with a proper amount of warm and cool colors to play together. Thanks!

When I look back at stuff like this, it's hard to imagine that *I* had the patience to do it. I spread out the really detailed birdy bits over many days, so it didn't see like such a difficult task.

Sounds like a sensible way of doing it. Me being me would probably have tried to do it in a onner and thrown the whole lot out of the window XD

LOL LOL... As long as I take my time and don't rush the project, it's not that hard to do all this stuff. The background bits - the starfield and the watercolor squares on top of that - were very quick and easy. The birds did take time to draw and color, but I spread it out so that it didn't kill my hands and eyes.

Haha! True, true. Rushing things often results to mediocre works, afterall.

It's not too hard to cut-and-paste stuff in Photoshop. The special effects are really simple ones, too. It was that, or fiddle with partial image alignments for three days if I'd actually tried to scan in the finished artwork!

What a gorgeous composition! The watercolor is lovely...the multi-media aspect of this piece adds unique flair. And of course the phoenixes are gorgeous, too.
Were the birds done on some form of thicker paper, like card-stock or tag-board? I can't imagine trying to use an exacto knife on normal paper with that level of detail...

rachaelm5 In reply to i-heart-dragons [2009-08-30 20:36:36 +0000 UTC]
Thanks very much!
Yeah, I used bristol board for the birds. Bristol is about twice the thickness of cardstock, and more uniform in its composition (where cardstock will give you horrible water spots if you use watercolor on it due to the irregularity of the pulp they use for that kind of paper).

This is just so cool! I'm really falling into the colors you used and all the little details in the feathers. It's all just so beautiful! And 50 hours?
I think I'd quit at 3, never look at it again for a few weeks, then pick up.

Yeah, 50 hours seems like a long time, but when you're really *into* the project, the time flies right by you. It's not 50 hours all in one sitting, either, mind you. My wrist would spontaneously combust if I did that. I spread it out over many days.
