This tutorial explains how to ink, as in where to make your lineart thicker and thinner, which really can be used for traditional and tablet users. Even if you have a tablet, or if you are a traditional inker this has some things that can help you. It has tips for people scanning in their lineart and some brush settings for tablet ppl. Then it goes over the path tool, and how to use it with different brush settings. NO TABLET NEEDED. I haven't tested earlier versions but I think I've used this method since Photoshop 7 and I've used every version of Photoshop since that version, so it should work for most computers.

FAQ:
Is there some way of automatically making the fade extend to the end of the path?
No, not that I know of there's no way to do this. You can always change the minimum width to a heigher percentage, and erase the end to make it tapper off. Or you can just go through the hard way an play around with the fade length in the brush window. Sorry

Why isn't the fade thing working D:
you have not gone into your brush window (F5 or window>brushes), gone to shape dynamic and switched the brush to 'fade' instead of pen pressure under size jitter. If you have not done this, it ain't gonna work. Also, mess with the fade value (the textbox next to the 'control' drop down menu. : )

I make my tutorials for free, but if you enjoy my tutorials and want to donate some funds for gas, art books and such, I would appreciate it. [link]

Great tutorial! I finally know how to deal with the pen function, which was one of the only things that I stayed away from because it confused the crap out of me. O_o

But I'm also having the same problem that a few others have too. I get exactly what ~Ipaos describes. (scroll down to the comment and link). My pen pressure doesn't taper off past maybe an inch, and when I try to put it to 500, it just looks like a huge line. Any tips?

What version of Photoshop are you using here? I have the same problem someone else seems to have; when I pick the pen pressure, a small triangle with an exclamation point comes up. If you hover over it, it says it is only a tablet option and won't apply the setting.
The fade option works fine. But I can not seem to get the brush stroke to be longer than a little less than an inch. It won't stay long and taper off like the ones you show in your tutorial. I'm afraid both of these problems might be from the version I am using; CS3 Extended.
Otherwise, this seems like a very good tutorial. It mentions a lot of good aspects though I really wish I could execute them in Photoshop myself.

sorry if this question iis a little weird but...
I'm a tablet user and wonder why you set the option other dinamics on with opacity off (that's good for me) but why flow is on?

thanks : )

and well, thanks a lot for your tutorial, is very useful and you're very good for having the patiente to doing it!

sashas In reply to Pia-sama [2008-11-01 03:31:36 +0000 UTC]

LOL, no one has ever asked me that before XD It's a good question. Well, I turn off opacity, because when inking, I'm trying to recreate the look of an ink pen... and black ink only makes black marks (unless you water it down or something). With opacity on, the black becomes more of a gray when pressed lightly, and it becomes more of a pencil or brush effect rather than that of a pen. Flow seems to keep the blacks blacker and allow for a smooth transition as it fades out. Though if you like opacity... I say go for it XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pia-sama In reply to sashas [2008-11-04 02:06:31 +0000 UTC]

I agree with the opacity off part, jus didn't understand why the flow it's on. Because sometimes, when you have it activated, it seems some strokes does not have all the blackness they need so when you paint some parts you get some lines a little faded...
Tahnks a lot for responding : )
Just another question, what could i do to can get more experience in painting, i mean, sometimes i don't know where to place the shades and the lights...

"Imagine your standing in a dark field in the middle of the night. There are no cars, stars, or streetlamps. The moon isn't clowing. You have a piece of paper in your left hand, and a pencil in the other. Inuyasha is before you. Can you draw him? Hecks no. It's freakin' pitchblack, and you can't see him."

lol! I laughed so hard at this. Very nice tutorial! Even though it's alot, it's very good!

Hey Sashas,

I have a question. I love the way the lines are inked in this tutorial. I have a tablet and I was wondering is it possible to achieve the same look that you have in this tutorial. I currently use the pen tool, but I'm looking for a faster method to the inking process for production purposes. I don't want to mess up the quality of the pen tool. Just find a faster way to achieve the same look. When I use the tablet, the lines look squiggly and crooked. What should I do?

This has helped so much, thank you! :3
