Description So I decided to revisit Downfall (which is only a working title btw) and revamp it as a dark fantasy.

Ballistic lances at the ready, the warriors began forming a defensive line, while the riflemen began moved towards their fortifications. Gunners set up their machine gun nests, while artillery crews and air defense squads scrambled to finalize preparations. In the distance, they could see the glows of many torches, while hearing the rumbling of thousands of footsteps and machines.

The cultists would inevitably outnumber them. First the waves of goblins would strike and exhaust the defenders' munitions and endurance. Next up would be the main charge led by minions and ogres, supported by tanks, war engines and aircraft. The Army of the United States of Columbia was prepared to face these challenges, yet many uncertainties remained. Despite an assessment of the composition of the enemy force, the appearance of enemy mages, greater demons or champions could complicate things greatly.

I’m a little confused, why is there a single line in formation and the rest not acting as if there’s a battle at all?

The first line ( because that’s what it looks to my eyes) - look like some classical or medieval battle formation- like some sort of “thin red line” or “battle square” or “phalanx” - with their shields and bayonets facing an enemy.

Those look far more like billhooks or similar pole-arm than a lance

Must be the mix of historical periods, which could happen if you advanced your side further then the other.

None of them - he doesn't exist in that world (though you could argue some characters may be similar)

I'm sure the firing line phalanx would be a effective strategy against infantry and cavalry but anything else would probably slaughter you

Well, they do have mages, tanks, artillery, aircraft and naval ships... The cultists also have those, as well as the ability to summon eldritch horrors.

If warhammer40k has taught me anything its that the enemies of humanity should fear weaklings in large numbers
