Description
So it took me all day to do, but here it is at last. A full tutorial from paper to deviantart, how I draw, scan, edit, color AND shade. If you want to see a live version of how to do this, please see the video tutorial: [link]SORRY FOR THE BLOODY HUGE FILE! YOU'LL HAVE TO DOWNLOAD IT, TO MAKE IT A REASONABLE SIZE! I'm really sorry about that. . . to resize it, I'd have to change all 48 slides, and then it's hard to read the photoshop text.

Ah, a most quality presentation and demonstration - now if only I had ps...I have GIMP for mac os x instead...and I have a question - would you know if there is a similar way of getting that shading technique to work through layers?
And from a critique stand point, I'd just suggest reducing the size of the images - but you already knew that

ThirdPotato In reply to KugaUK [2009-06-13 15:03:09 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! And ja, if gimp has layers, and layer MODES then there should be a layer option for something similar to "Multiply." Basically if you put the shading on a layer over your solid colors, you can lower the opacity of the shading layer. Does that help any?
And thanks for the advice! I definitely took that into account with my other flash tutorial XD cuz this was a pain to work with. Though if you hit download it resizes it to fit the screen. It just covers the download button, but that is also a problem with dA coding XD

*Scribbles down on the e-notepad* I shall investigate and see what I turn up, as it would really revolutionise the way I do pictures! Many thanks.
And cha! Tel me about it - whenever I upload a movie to DA Film it ALWAYS ends up corrupted in places...

x] You know I've been practicing color techniques recently and this looks like it'd be an interesting method to try! I really liked how it was set up! It wasn't too brief (gave the right amount of detail) and it wasn't too long, which is good cause I get bored easily xD. I'm eager to try out this method, it seems like it would be alot faster than colouring everything by hand (x_x which is what I've been doing for the past four years). I'll be sure to use it! x] I'll link you do the finished pieced when I'm done. Thanks so much, I really love it when other artists do stuff like this. It's so considerate! FAVE

I really liked your shading method a lot. It makes a lot of sense because in most cases, all the base colours are darkened by the same amount (unless there are multiple light sources). Now I understand how efficiently you create your work. Thank you very much for sharing.

Thank you so much for takin' a gander! Ja, I always try to work efficiently, quickly and hopefully well XD our current digital coloring prof is all about "doing it fast so you get more money" XD That statement rubs me the wrong way in SO many manners lol. I think that there are fast ways of doing things that can still look good though n.n

Chibizaki In reply to ThirdPotato [2009-04-15 19:02:40 +0000 UTC]
I like how your prof thinks but at the same time I get what you mean. Fast doesn't necessarily mean low quality. It's knowing the tools and how to use them effectively. I think it's good for both you and the client since you're saving time, and the client can get the piece of work faster. And as they say, time is money.

Thank so much for the awesome tutorial! It was really easy to go through, and I wasn't bothered by the file size at all. It's just too bad my crappy scanner doesn't scan pencil. -_- But it's a great tutorial! I'm gonna make something right now with it!

I love it and intend to fave and practice! Thanks for this!
My only concern though would be the shading and highlights on his forehead. With the way that the hair is set, even with the lighting coming in from a side angle, that big bright spot doesn't make sense to me. It may very well just be me, though. But it's the spot right between his eyebrows.

ThirdPotato In reply to hellbunny [2009-04-04 07:19:47 +0000 UTC]
Thankye kindly! Well mainly because his whole part of his forehead there is in the light, however the cast shadow of his pompadour creates a sort of frame around his face in shadows; Hope that clears it up! Good luck!

It's so helpful as I just got the new PS. I feel like an old fart for only knowing what to do except for the basic things! It's nice to see you in your natural habitat. It's been so long and you are still keeping those journals. How many do you really have? I really do hope France is doing well for you. Your characters have become so animated. It's all in the subtle details. Wishing all the best!

XD No problem! Again, ja, take your time, and you don't have to color it or anything XD
A commission is a paid-for request. For instance, for me, it costs $25 to tell me what to draw, for a 1-2 character, colored and shaded image. More on that in my Commissions section of my journal.
