Description Span of time.

2000 years ago, the Greeks had a way of understanding and talking about time that we have all but lost. To them time was not just a static thing. A past event could have impact and effect on a current event and move into the future. While we understand these concepts when they are explained, the beauty of Koine Greek, is that these thoughts, as well as many others, could be contained within one word. For us, to convey the same ideas, takes many words, many sentences and even in some cases paragraphs.

This image takes the concept of time and measurement, and treats them as equals. It challenges us to consider the meaning of time and its measurement, for our lives and our world.

thanks Ania

this kind of work takes time and patience to create. It is a favourite of mine, but I only do it in the winter.

In winter? It looks so warm... It remainds me at a large library with a fireplace. Where the time goes by in a different way.

I like that...

My studio isin my basement, it is only well light when the studio lights are on, it is warm, but you would have to squint very hard in order to see a library. The trunk, on which the picture was taken belonged to my grandfather. It si about 100 years old.

I love the brown hues (reminiscent of the old masters’ ageless paintings) and your astute choice of the vintage watch and compass. This is an image which I find downright pleasurable to view, beautifully photographed. I’m still struggling with trying to understand Einstein’s theory of relativity LOL but your comments have got me drifting off into thoughts about the meaning of time and its measurement, forcing my lazy intellect to get a few gears grinding…

WayneBenedet In reply to saperlipop [2007-07-24 13:39:18 +0000 UTC]

lol....

I wish you all the luck with the relativity thing. I have never been able to understand it. Blind faith is about all i can muster in that area.

That series of pictures was rather a "gift". I did not sit back and think it up, it just kind of came. So in a way, i don't take a lot of credit for the idea.

The watch is something that i have owned for years, it is about an 1870's vintage and still keeps excellent time.

While a physicist looks at time as the expansion of the universe the Greeks evidently knew that the human element could not be removed from the concept. Without that human interaction relativity becomes all but meaningless, and yet relativity is a cornerstone of physics. (Did that make any sense?) lol. Anyway it is a great photo.
